Being a computer science
student , i don't really think that urdu is an essential course but
unfortunately it is. In second semester we are offered a course of URDU or
HUMANITIES, majority of the students opt for URDU whereas a few of the
students usually foreigners opted for humanities. I don't know why it is
made compulsory in our second semester, instead of urdu we can have other
foreign languages like German, French etc. Because a number of computer
science students go abroad for their masters and instead of learning these
foreign languages before leaving, it is better to have an exposure to these
languages during their graduation.
I am not denying the importance of urdu language. It is correct that its our
national language and we must and should study it but just think for a while
that aren't we studying urdu since our class 1 till intermediate. Aren't
those twelve years enough for a student to learn URDU? Isn't that much urdu
enough for a Pakistani student? Most of you will surely agree to my point of
view but the urdu lovers wouldn't.
I am sure that I will have the response like "China has progressed by giving
more importance to their national language ". I fully agree to such a
response but they have not progressed by reading GHAZALS, they have not
progressed by reading DASTAANS and other forms. They utilized their language
in understanding science and technology. They translated the useful books in
their own language instead of teaching GHAZALS, DASTAANS etc. If I were
taught science and technology in urdu then I would not have written this
article but the problem is that we are taught DASTAANS and POEMS in URDU as
if we will pursue our careers as an urdu poet or an urdu writer.
A computer
science student never wants to become an urdu poet or a writer. We have
already studied ghazals of ghalib, Mir Taqi Mir, etc, stories of Sir Syed
Ahmed khan, Imtiaz Ali Taj etc till our intermediate and still there are
teachers that want us to study more and more urdu. They must be thinking
that by forcing us to study urdu they are doing a great service but they
surely are not doing any service to the young entrepreneurs.
I am not
the only one who is against urdu in my department, infact I have discussed
the same topic with many of my seniors and they are all of the same view.
One more
thing that Urdu is taught only DCS Karachi University. It is not taught in
other computer institutes such as FAST, SZABIST etc.
In the end, i would like to recommend the concerned people to please think
about it seriously. Please include some foreign languages as a course along
with Urdu (as an optional course) especially for computer science students.
