40th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry
40th Infantry Regiment was formed during the early summer of 1862 after several attempts to organize a unit. Some of the men were from Attala County. It was active in the conflicts at Iuka and Corinth, then, assigned to J.C. Moore's and L. Hebert's Brigade, Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana, was captured at Vicksburg in July, 1863. After being exchanged the regiment served in the Army of Tennessee under the command of Generals Baldwin and Featherston. It participated in the Atlanta
Campaign, Hood's winter operations in Tennessee, and the North Carolina Campaign. Its casualties at Iuka were 10 killed, 39 wounded, and 21 missing of the 314 engaged, and during the siege at Vicksburg there were 12 killed and 38 wounded. The unit reported 10 killed, 57 wounded, and 27 missing at Peach Tree Creek, totalled 64 effectives in December, 1864, and surrendered on April 26, 1865. The field officers were Colonels Wallace B. Colbert and George P. Wallace, Lieutenant Colonels Josiah A.P.
Campbell and James R. Childress, and Majors W.M. Gibbons and Enoch McDonald.

NASH-JAMES RUEBEN SR.
James Rueben Nash, Sr. 64, of 917 Nason St., Lakeview, died Monday in a local hospital. Mr. Nash had been a resident of Lakeview for the past 30 years and was a retired electrical contractor. He was a member of East Ridge Church of God where he taught the Men's Bible Class and served on the offical board of the church.
He is survived by wife, Mrs. Edna Tucker Nash; two daughters, Mrs. Aileen Schubert, Rossville, and Mrs. Gloria Harbin, Huntsville, Ala.; two sons, James Rueben Nash, Jr., Chattanooga, Tenn., and Donald Wayne Nash of Washington,
D.C.; two sisters, Mrs. Lillie Mae Warf, Baton Rouge, La., and Miss Amanda Fuller, Lakeview; two brothers, Bob Fuller, Kelleyville, Calif., and Neal Fuller, Monroe, La.; six grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at East Ridge Church of God with Rev. R.L. Blazier officiating. Active pallbearers will be Donald Lance, Charles Hain, William Philpot, Jimmy Tucker, Richard Tucker, Denny Nash. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Men's Bible Class of East Ridge Church of God, Interment in Lakewood Memory Garden. The body is at Lane Funeral Home Inc.

EDNA WALTERS
Edna Nash Walters of Rossville, died Wednesday, July 31, 1996, in a local hospital. She was 86.
She was a member of the East Ridge Church of God and the widow of Rueben Nash and Julian Walters.
Survivors include her children, Aileen Nash Schubert, Rossville, James R. Nash, Chattanooga, Gloria Nash Harbin, Cleveland, and Don Wayne Nash, Arlington, Va.; four sisters, Odessa Johnson, Adell Black and Ruth Fuller, all of Delhi, La., and Henrietta Carpenter, Roxie, Miss.; one brother, James W. Tucker, Rossville, Ga.; six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at the South Crest Chapel of Lane Funeral Home with the Rev. John Lemons and Rev. Terry Harris officiating. Burial will be in Lakewood Memory Gardens, South. Visitation will be today after 6 p.m. at the funeral home.
