| On March 17, 1917, five women at New York University Law Scholl took a pledge of sisterhood and loyalty, founding the Alpha Chapter of the Delta Phi Epsilon soroity. It was the first non-sectarian, social sorority & the only one founded at a professional school. Five years later, DPhiE was incorporated under the laws of New York State. On December 5, 1922, the first Canadian chapter was installed. There are currently more than 25,000 DPhiE sisters. Every year, on March 17th, undergaduates and alumnae celebrate Founders Day. We honor the women who founded our sorority, and the fine ideals and the purposes which inspired them. Over three quaters of a century after Delta Phi Epsilon began, sisters still embrace the beliefs of our founders. Minna Goldsmith Mahler, Eva Effron Robin, Ida Beinstock Landau, Sylvia Steierman Cohn, and Dorothey Cohen Schwartzman are the five young law students who saw Delta Phi Epsilon as a society to "promote good fellowship among the women students and among the various colleges in the country...to create a secret society composed of these women based upon their good moral character, regardless of nationality or creed...to have distinct chapters at various colleges..." with the motto Esse Quam Videri: to be rather than to seem to be. |
