Every Breath You Take

Chip shuddered as the radio DJ made his cheerful announcement. "This song goes out to Chip, from Marty."

"Every breath you take
And every move you make
Every bond you break, every step you take
I'll be watching you."

He huddled in the darkness near the window, peering out at the street below. He was sure the man standing beneath the streetlight was staring straight at him, even though he was hidden by the thick draperies.

"Every single day
And every word you say
Every game you play, every night you stay
I'll be watching you."

God, how could he have been such a fool? He'd only been 22 when he met Marty and people had *warned* him that the man was too possessive, but he hadn't taken them seriously. He'd been proud that Marty cared so much about him, that he was so attentive and so jealous of the time he spent with other people. God help him, he'd even been proud that he could inspire such intense feelings in the man.

"Oh, can't you see
You belong to me?
How my poor heart aches
With every step you take
Every move you make
Every vow you break
Every smile you fake, every claim you stake
I'll be watching you."

Until he'd met Dominic. Dominic was everything he'd thought Marty was; strong, confident, self-assured, supportive. It was Dominic who'd made him see the difference between being loved and being possessed, the difference between being cherished and being owned. It was Dominic that he loved and wanted to spend his life with.

But Marty wasn't willing to let him go. And the threats and the stalking had begun.

"Since you've gone I've been lost without a trace
I dream at night, I can only see your face
I look around, but it's you I can't replace
I feel so cold, and I long for your embrace
I keep crying baby, baby please."

"Please, please, just go away, Marty," he begged silently, burying his face in his hands. "Don't do this to me. If you really love me, you wouldn't be doing this to me!"

When he returned his gaze to the street, Marty was no longer in sight. The door! Had he locked the door when he came in? He was sure he had. He was positive! But--

He forced himself from the floor and ran to the door of the apartment, hearing footsteps in the hall as he fumbled with the locks. As he leaned against the door to snap the dead bolt in place, he felt the knob turn beneath his hand.

"Oh, can't you see
You belong to me?

How my poor heart aches
With every step you take
Every move you make
Every vow you break
Every smile you fake, every claim you stake
I'll be watching you."

"Chip? Let me in."

"Dominic? Is that you?" He opened the door as fast as he'd locked it and threw himself into the arms of the man in the hall. "Oh, God, Dominic! I was so scared!"

"Shh, shh," Dominic murmured as he gathered the trembling young man into his arms. "It's all right. They got him."

"Are you sure?" Chip pulled back to look into his lover's eyes. "Do they have enough to hold him this time?"

"Yeah. It's over, babe." Dominic said as he led his beloved into the apartment and closed the door behind them. "It's all over now."

"Every move you make, every step you take
I'll be watching you
I'll be watching you."
