Douglas County scored five goals in the first 19 minutes and went on to trounce Villa Rica 11-0 in opening round action in the second-annual Douglas County Soccer Invitational Monday night.
"For an opening game I was pleased," said Tigers' coach Brian Davidson. "We passed the ball well and our midfielders and forwards looked good."
It took just over two minutes for Douglas County to get on the scoreboard as Matt Parmer scored from just outside the box off a corner kick.
Three minutes later freshman Tyler Armstrong scored on an easy header from in-close to make it 2-0.
DC, dominating the game from the start, needed seven minutes to score again as Zack Rozier broke open and beat the keeper one-on-one to make it 3-0.
The Tigers added a goal from Christian Burbano at the 24:15 mark of the first half and Rozier's second goal 90 seconds later made it 5-0. At that point, the Tigers started to sub freely.
Leading 5-0 at intermission, DC added six more second-half goals. Less than nine minutes into the second half Rozier completed his hat trick as he scored off an excellent pass. Armstrong followed with his second goal before Kevin Stewart scored on a rebound shot to make it 8-0.
Henry Burbano scored the Tigers' next who goals before a Jaffa Sayeed goal wrapped up the scoring.
We've got eight seniors, but not a lot of them are returning starters so we're still young. Our freshman(Armstrong) looks good and our leaders are starting to step up," added Davidson.
The Tigers' coach feels the field for the tournament appears well balanced.
"all the county teams should be strong and every team will have to work hard to win any of its games,"said the coach. "Our goal is to be playing Saturday night (in the finals) and not Saturday afternoon (in the consolation rounds). The kids look forward to this tournament and it should be exciting."
