Think Outside the Boxes
The theme of the 2005 DC Dyke March seeks to affirm that homogeny cannot help the queer movement. The Dyke March welcomes all people and their unique identities including SOFFAs. Every day folks along the queer spectrum are embracing and inventing new ways of describing their identities including ways of honoring shifting and multiple identities. While assimilationist, mainstream GLBT organizations such as the HRC continue to try and convince the straight majority that were just like them more and more people get left behind. We are not just like the straight majority and are proud of our unique and diverse ways of life and identifying. The time of G, L, B, and T being the only choices is over. The Dyke March encourages everyone to think outside the boxes that we have to check: male, female, gay, and lesbian are all identities that should be supported, but not at the expense of the myriad other options out there. All people of all identities are asked to join us on Saturday June 11 to celebrate this diversity and raise visibility for those who the gay mainstream tries to sweep under the rug.
