Woodcarving & Papier-Mache
Among other products of Paete has to offer are the woodcarving and papier-mache. Practically all the natives are in these businesses. We could all see the creative ingenuity of paeteños by looking at the century old artifacts found in churches and other antique store. At present, Paete artists carve not only religious figures but also furniture and other items. All crafts made has a paete artist devotion. In the heart of Laguna province lies the town of Paete which was founded in 1580. This has been a town of wood carvers. The most famous attraction in the town is the church with its "Philippine Baroque" carving of St. James, on horseback, battling the Moors. But if you wander in the town, you will see the pride of the carvers gracing their own small homes in the form of ornate balustrades and scrollwork ornamentation. There are said to be more than 3000 carvers in this village who work in a communal fashion with several carvers often sharing the same piece. |
