Take My Heart

Written on April 24, 2000. This song talks about one of the major problems I see in the Church today: deadness. We'd rather use a set program than let the Holy Spirit move. We get used to the Sunday routine, and consequently we get nothing from it. We need God to break our hearts and break our routine and teach us to truly worship so that we can experience Him anew not only every Sunday, but every day of our lives.

Many people line the pews
One Bible-width apart
The words just barely reach their ears
Say nothing of their hearts
Singing hymns, they read along
But never hear the words of the songs
The "joyful" is gone, leaving just "noise"
And the people look tired, sad, and annoyed
Are we so far gone that we can't see
This is not how it's meant to be?

Chorus A:
Lord, take our hearts
Lord, break our hearts
We give them, wholly, to you
Lord, take our hearts
Lord, break our hearts
Teach us to truly worship You

I know the whole Sunday routine
I go through all the motions
And I perform each ritual
Showing no emotion
So when the music's over
And all the church lights dim
Do I really find myself
Any closer to Him?
You've opened my eyes, now I can see
This is not how it's meant to be

Chorus B:
Lord, take my heart
Lord, break my heart
I give it, wholly, to You
Lord, take my heart
Lord break my heart
And teach me to truly worship You

Chorus B
