Background Scripture: John 6:25-60
Jesus had been talking to His followers about Him being the Bread of Life. After He had finished, many of the followers said, "This teaching is too harsh! Who can accept it?" (paraphrasing mine). After that, most of His followers left. The ridiculous part of the situation was that all Jesus had told them to do was believe that He was the Son of God, and they would receive eternal life (v.40). But these people found it too hard to believe, so they left Him.
After these followers left, Jesus turned to His 12 disciples and asked them if they would like to leave Him as well (v.67). But Peter spoke up and said, "If we leave You, to whom will we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we believe that you are the Holy One of God" (v.68).
This story still holds relevance in our lives today. Jesus is calling us to follow Him, and all we have to do is believe. Yet, many people consider even this simple task too difficult. However, we Christians need to be strong enough to follow Him even when others do not.
Consider this: If you don't accept Jesus, where are you going to go for answers? Like Peter said, "...only You [Jesus] have the words of eternal life" (paraphrasing mine).
People all around us (and some Christians as well) are searching for answers in all the wrong places: in drugs, in money, in sex, in all the things the world has to offer. And yes, they may find answers in these things, but the answers are only temporary, and will leave them in the cold. And they'll be just as lost as before. That's when it's our job to bring them to the One who has the answers: Jesus Christ. He has all the right answers, and only He can give us eternal life.
