Troop 1363 completed the Building Art Try It with a trip to
downtown Portland to look at the different buildings. Some of the
buildings are brand new and others are over 100 years old. We even
went up into the US Bank tower to get a view from above many of
the buildings. The girls liked the purple octopuse over the entrance to
the Greek resturant on 4th Ave. best. The weather was great and
everyone had fun.
|
|
We also completed the Science Fun Try It by conducting a number
of experiments using ingrediants found in the kitchen. The girls
learned how to make carbon dioxide and use it to extinguse a candle
by mixing baking soda and viniger togather. They also saw how dish
soap will break up the surface tension on water. We even learned
about how crystals form by making our own rock candy. We will
continue along these lines at our next meeting when we make a flash
light using a lemon for the battery!

Daisy Troop 2450 spent some time sampling M&M's to determine
which color was their favorite. Once they chose a color, the girls wrote
a letter and drew a picture for their favorite color/character.
|
We went on a great tour of the Hillsboro post office. After the tour,
they mailed their letters. Within 3 weeks, each girl received an envelope
from the M&M/Mars company filled with information about the
|
history, production, and trivia regarding chocolate. Each Daisy also
received M&M stickers and a coupon for a package of M&Ms. The
troop highly recommends this activity!

Troop #57 went to Kah-nee-ta in October. They had a blast
staying in the teepee and swimming in the hot spring pool. Next
time they will pick a warm time of the year to go. It got down to
15 degrees over night!!! The Resort offers a special rate for Girl
Scout troops (or boy scout troops) which includes a teepee and
admission to the pool. Our weekend of two nights with food and
gas cost our troop of 11 girls about $370.00

Troop 1363 just finished the Food Fun Try It. At one meeting, we
made baked apples and fizzy punch from the recipe in the Brownie
Handbook. We talked about the food pyramid and foods to eat for a
well balanced diet. At our next meeting, we had the girls bring in some
of their favorite recipes from home. We will compile these into a troop
cookbook. The girls decorated the covers of their cookbooks.

At our October Brownie Meeting Troop 725 celebrated Earth
Science Week by drawing models of the earth. First I introduced the
idea of a scientific model as a "best" representation given the facts at
hand. Each group of 3 girls was given a large stapled-shut grocery
bag containing an apple, a potato, and a ziploc bag of peanuts. The
bags had been rubbed with a couple of drops of orange extract right
before being handed out. The girls were asked to "model" what was
inside by drawing a picture and discussing it among themselves and the
other groups. It was surprising how many girls thought 3 oranges were
in the bags, and were really surprised when the bags were opened.
|
|
Next each group drew a model of what they believed was inside the
earth. The models ranged from the standard textbook: core, mantle
and crust to an earth full of grass "cuz that's what's on top". Very fun
and lots of discussion!

This project was suggested by the Geological Society of America, of
which I am a member. Any troops needing geological expertise,
call me!

Troop 725 is working on the Music Try-It. At our last meeting all 10
girls made kazoos from wax paper and paper towel rolls, then we
kazooed "Make New Friends" as part of our Investiture/Rededication
Ceremony--what a racket!
