PUPPETRY BADGE
PURPOSE:
To learn about the art form and presentation skills for the development
of a positive self-image, enhancing communication skills and fostering
teamwork within a group.
INTRODUCTION
The ancient art of puppetry is very popular in today's world. We have
become accustomed to seeing puppets perform on television, in
shopping centers, and even at birthday parties. They are commonly
displayed at craft shows and exhibits, and sold as toys and educational
teaching aides.
Though traditional uses continue, today we use puppets to pass on
messages and develop understanding. There is no doubt that puppetry,
in addition to its value as pure entertainment, is an effective tool for
communicating and instructing.
What do puppets offer that justifies their wide application and appeal?
Basically, it is their unique ability to stimulate and enhance imagination.
Everyday life situations can be transformed into new and exciting areas
to explore for both performers and viewers alike.

*1. Look up the origin of puppets. See how many different kinds you
can list. If you have any at home, bring them to share at a troop
meeting.
*2. Using a plain sock as a hand puppet, develop a puppet voice just
for your puppet (a face isn't even necessary).
*3. Make a paper plate or spoon puppet. Using it, act out. "If I could
do anything I wanted, I would..."
4. In a Brownie ring or patrol act out or use puppets to show how it
would feel to be the only cat in the dog pound or the only earthling on
an alien planet or the only dandelion in a rose garden, etc. How would
you feel?
*5. Make a paper bag or other puppet to act out your favorite fairy
tale, folk tale or Indian legend with your troop. Is there a message in
the stories about feelings or values? (I.e. Three Little Pigs, Ugly
Duckling, Beauty and the Beast.) Discuss the stories as a group.
6. Shadow puppets are a very old form of puppetry. Learn about
them and how to make them. Since shadow puppets need little detail,
they are easy to make. You can create many illusions with them (an
example: a shadow puppet gets larger or smaller as it moves closer or
away from the light source). Act out a simple story using puppets.
7. Learn how to make and light a stage for shadow puppets and one
for hand puppets (paper bag, cloth, finger, papier-mach6, stick
puppets). (Required for Cadettes and seniors).
*8. Community service offers a unique opportunity for a troop to
practice communication skills while building a stronger sense of service
to community, plus teaching them confidence.
