|
We have just a few more girls that are looking for troops to join. They would prefer to be in
troops from their own school but some of them might be willing to join a troop at another
school if there is a spot open. Please call Sandy if you can help.

Bilingual people needed .
|
...to serve every girl, everywhere. People with skills in both English and Spanish are needed
to support participation in Girl Scouting of girls from Spanish-speaking families. If you meet
any volunteers, young adults or parents of Girl Scouts with skills in both languages, please
ask them if you could pass on their name and number to your Neighborhood Service Team.
Many Girl Scout leaders need bilingual people to communicate with families that speak only
Spanish or help out leaders with Spanish-speaking girls in their troops. Besides being a Girl
Scout troop leader, there are many ways that bilingual volunteers can be of assistance from
the comfort of their own home. Please call Megan at 503/598-6523 or 1-800-338-5248 ext. 6523
if you have any questions. Thank you!

Babysitting at Leader's Meetings
|
Unfortunately, we are no longer able to provide babysitting at the monthly Leader's Meetings.
This provides a great opportunity for you to get the parents of your troop involved. Ask your
parents to help by watching your children while you are attending the meeting. Our
neighborhood has a STAR Family Patch Program this year. When the parents participate in
different areas of service to the troop, their daughter will receive a patch. Get your girls to help
you recruit their parents to help you by babysitting once a month. You can get a copy of the
patch program requirements at our Yahoo Groups at

Discontinued Junior Badges
|
There are many badges from the old Junior Handbook and Badge Book that have been
discontinued. Tell your scouts that if they want to work on any badge listed in the old books,
they should let you know what it is ahead of time. Then you as a leader need to call or go to
the Council Store and ask if they have any of the badges in storage behind the counter and
if it is BUY IT RIGHT AWAY! As of a few weeks ago, they had most old badges, but were
especially low or out of Dabbler badges (I think Art is gone). Once a badge of out of stock at
our council store, it is gone forever. Avoid disappointing your girls (and parents too) by
instructing them to talk with you about badges they want to work on ahead of time.

Leader Resource Day
|
Girl Scouts - Columbia River Council is planning a fantastic day just for Girl Scout leaders to be
held on Saturday February 2, 2002 at the Water Resource Education Center in Vancouver, WA.
|
Presentations will include "Recycle Man," petroglyph rubbings, habitat in a baggie, fish
dissection, "Decision at The Dallas," and posture and body image for girls. Information booths
will also provide resources to Girl Scout leaders throughout the 10 AM to 2 PM event.
|
Our goal is to give Girl Scout leaders resources, education and fun ideas to take back to their
Girl Scout troops. Girl Scout troop 4041 will be acting as hostesses greeting Girl Scout leaders
and helping with logistics at this exciting event.
|
Twenty one people are already registered with our attendance goal being 150!
|
Thank you for your assistance in spreading the word to our valuable Girl Scout leaders and
volunteers. Confirmation letters will be mailed to registered participants with a schedule for the
day, directions to the location and updated information.
|
Pre-registration is available through the G.R.E.A.T. Guide #8202-02E page 70.

Family Giving
|
As Christmas time approaches, we begin to think of children in need. We take the
opportunity help those who are less fortunate than we are. One way you and your girls can
do that is by helping the less fortunate Girl Scouts in our council. Moneys given to the
Family Giving campaign help pay for the Opportunity Fund so that girls of families who
cannot afford Girl Scout events, uniforms and books can still fully participate. Encourage
your troop to bring in a dollar or two to give to the council to help their sister Girl Scouts.
Remind the parents that all donations are tax deductible.
