Gameplay

Let me start off by saying that WWF Royal Rumble is an arcade game; meaning if you want various game modes, numerous wrestlers, and a create-a-wrestler mode, this game is NOT for you. WWF Royal Rumble only has 2 game modes: Exhibition and Royal Rumble. Exhibition pits you and a partner against 10 WWF superstars and their partners. You can choose from The Rock, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, Triple H, The Undertaker, or any of the other wrestlers in the game, for a grand total of 21 wrestlers. Each character has his own unique set of moves to use against your opponent. Also you can choose between 3 sets of partner attacks. This mode is very fun, yet very shallow. You can only fight in the ring or in one backstage area. When you do fight backstage, it happens randomly. The ring lights will start to flicker and the screen will go black. When the video returns you, your opponent, your partner, and the referee are in a backstage area. The second and biggest mode in this game is (obviously) the Royal Rumble. The Royal Rumble pits you against 29 other WWF superstars. Also 9 people can fight in the ring at one time (which is more than any other wrestling game out there) without slowdown. You can also play with 60 or 90 total superstars in the Rumble. Right now you’re probably asking yourself, if there are only 21 wrestlers how can you have 30, 60, and 90 man Royal Rumbles? The answer: wrestlers who have been eliminated return to the ring and rejoin the rumble.

Difficulty

This game is not difficult to learn. You could knock out your opponent by simply pressing a button over and over again. Also, to perform wrestlers' trademark moves, all that is needed is a single press of a button. However, the later exhibition stages are tough. Also the longer you a in the Rumble the harder it becomes to execute moves. The learning curve for this game is about 30 minutes.

Graphics
The graphics in this game are better than any other wrestling game out on the market. Wrestlers are highly detailed and you can see the damage done on weapons. The audience, too, is very detailed and unique. Every move done by your superstar is done smoothly without any clipping at all. Even when all 9 wrestlers are in the ring, all moves are fluid and every detail is seen.

Sound

The major drawback in this game is the sound. Once again THQ failed to add ringside announcers to a wrestling game. The music playing during the match is very plain and leaves much to be desired. Also wrestlers' theme music was left out. When they win, you get a 4 second clip of them celebrating in the ring with their theme song muffled in the background. The sound of punches, weapons breaking, and the audience, however, is very good.

Overall

Overall, WWF Royal Rumble is an excellent arcade game. It is not, however, a very good wrestling game. Not enough modes (not even tag team) haunt this games replay value. It should not, however, be overlooked. It is a great game.
