A quest of epic
proportions. A mission that could take years to complete.
Is this a new game? No, it is the task that every
Dreamcast RPG fan has been undertaking by trying to find
that defining DC RPG. Unfortunately, gamers will not find
Silver a fitting end to this hunt. It is a port of a
title that was trying to emulate the console RPG on the
PC. As you can imagine, the ironic full-circle this title
has taken isnt without issues.
Console RPGs
have always focused more on storytelling than convoluted
combat systems. Silvers weak storytelling attempt
was further accented by a plot that didnt flow at
all and a sever case of, What am I supposed to do
next? syndrome.
The combat
system is anything but convoluted. Co-adventurers are
controlled by the computer and suffer from a weak A.I. as
they never seem to defend or attack at the correct times.
Luckily, you can, and should assume control of them. The
combat ends up with the player picking an enemy and
resorting to some sever button mashing. Leveling a
character up is impossible as the adventurers only raise
levels at predetermined times, usually right after a boss-battle.
Camera problems and slowdown round out the marks against
Silver.
The plusses
include crisp character graphics and nicely rendered
backgrounds with hot-spots (switches, doors,
etc.) that can be pointed out by using the L button.
Silver is merely formulistic and unimaginative.
Recommended for the RPG famished.
