Books
and the Reading Experience My
Profiles My LibraryThing Profile, home library inventory, tagging project, and reading lists (where I put most of my energy these days) PaperbackSwap Member (Ludmilla), use for book trades Favorite Categories I read a little in most major fiction categories – but literary, classics, historical, fantasy and science fiction are primarily what I gravitate toward. For non-fiction, I enjoy history, bios of historical figures, travel literature, and the occasional natural history or popular science selection. Topics of special interest to me are mythology, folklore, archaeology, and anthropology, though I really haven’t scratched more than the bare surface in most of those categories. My guilty pleasures are adventure novels, and one of my first loves was the Gothic. They comfort me on rainy days or when I’m having a bout of melancholia. Reading Goals I don’t like setting a
number to my goals, but I thought I might challenge myself by putting in
writing some reading goals I’d like to accomplish over the next several
years: ·
Award winning Children’s Literature (using
the Newbery and Carnegie lists) ·
Short Stories (not counting anthologies
and bound collections) – usually 2 or 3 per week or 10 per month. A sampling
of songs and/or artists that I like · Everything so far by Snow Patrol · Death Cab for Cutie, Plans · Remote Part and Warnings/Promises by Idlewild · Engine Driver by the Decemberists · I Wish by This Ascension (I actually love everything on their Sever album) · This Woman’s Work by Kate Bush · Animal Instinct by the Cranberries · Another Time and Day and Night by Shroud ·
Night Ride Across the · Darklands by Golden Palominos · Tyranny (of your company) and Eighty-Eight by Anna Domino · Sheep’s A Wolf and What I Hear You Can't, How Come? by Caterwaul ·
Hard Sun by · Almost everything by Throwing Muses / Kristen Hersh · Sisters of Mercy when I’m in the mood for Goth · Xymox (Clan of Xymox) – another dark wave/goth band (just realized they used to open for DCD) · Dead Can Dance (unclassifiable and experimental) – Lisa Gerrard’s voice is an instrument · Peter Murphy / Bauhaus ·
M is for Millions by The Millions – a
band from · Poe’s Haunted CD – love everything on this one, but Wild is a personal favorite of mine. · Kristen Hall –In the tradition of the Indigo Girls (I get the impression Kristen and Amy et al are buds). I have Fact and Fiction and Real Life Stuff. · Michelle Malone’s Relentless album Some of
my favorite films (in no particular order) ·
Hero (and
several other Yimou Zhang films) ·
The Horseman on the Roof – 1995, with
Juliette Binoche and Olivier ·
Les Miserables – 1995, with
Jean-Paul Belmondo ·
Donnie Darko – 2001, with Jake Gyllanhaal ·
A Clockwork · A Room with a View -1985, with Helena Bonham Carter and Julian Sands · North by Northwest and Vertigo (my favorite Hitchcock movies) · Spartacus – 1960, with Kirk Douglas and Jean Simmons · Any Peter Greenaway film, but esp The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover · Tom Tykwer’s films; The Princess and the Warrior is my favorite · Raising Arizona ranks as one of my favorite comedies · Harold & Maude for dark humor More to be
inserted, as I think of them. I’m not
at all current with most new music and films today. |
