| Folken is Van's older brother and a key supporter of the Zaibach Empire. He is Dornkirk's right-hand strategist and technologist. Folken's job is to carry out Zaibach's evil plans, develop new weapon technology, and capture the Escaflowne. He sincerely believes in the Empire. |
| Merle is an orphan who was taken in by the royal Fanelian family. She has been Van's devoted companion since they were both very young and is very protective of him. Because Hitomi gets a lot of attention from Van, Merle's jealousy often rears its ugly head. She is almost always fighting or arguing with the girl whom she sees as competition. |
