Trunks Saga One year has passed since Goku defeated Freeza, Chichi hires a private tutor named Shu Saiaku to help Gohan with his studies. Saiaku is a terrible man who presents Gohan with difficult problems. If Gohan is unable to solve the problems, Saiaku disciplines him to the tune of a whip! Saiaku speaks ill of Goku, saying that his not returning home is the reason Gohan is so rebellious. Upon hearing this, Chichi gets angry and drives Saiaku out of the house. Vegeta returns from his trip through space, and grows annoyed that Goku is still nowhere to be found. Bulma suggests to Vegeta that he's done all he can for now, and to stay at the Capsule Corporation until Goku finally does show up. While studying in his room, Gohan senses a large, menacing Ki in the distance. Could this Ki belong to...Freeza? Gohan races off in the direction he feels Freeza's and one other large Ki. The other familiar faces of the Z Team arrive at the same location, but Goku is still not among them. A huge flying saucer lands, and Freeza, his father, King Cold, and a horde of foot soldiers exit the craft. Near death, what was left of Freeza had been floating among the debris from Planet Namek's explosion when he was rescued by King Cold's ship. Freeza was treated for his injuries and given cybernetic replacements for the parts of his body that were lost, giving him an even greater strength! Goku is on his way back to Earth, but several hours behind Freeza's arrival. Freeza plans to greet Goku with the extinction of Earth, and dispatches his soldiers to see to it. However, a lone boy steps forward to face Freeza's men, and in the blink of an eye, manages to take several of them out with his sword! The young man faces Freeza, saying that he knows that Freeza is going to die here and now. The remainder of Freeza's foot soldiers charge toward the young man, but are quickly defeated by his swordsmanship. The young man tells Freeza that there is more than one Super Saiyan in the universe, and to Freeza's horror, undergoes the transformation to Super Saiyan! From a distance, Vegeta can tell how powerful the young man must be, and grows angry at his strength. Seeing the form of a Super Saiyan before him, Freeza flashes back to the battle he underwent with Goku, and becomes enraged. Freeze attacks the young man with a force ten times greater than what he used to destroy Namek! The young man catches the energy, and is uninjured even after Freeza detonates the energy. The young man catches Freeza by surprise, and as Freeza dodges the attack, the young man brings his sword down on him, cleanly cutting him in two! The young man cuts Freeza's body into progressively smaller pieces, then vaporizes the pieces with an energy blast! A short distance away, the Z Team cannot believe what they have just witnessed. King Cold talks the young man out of his sword, then turns to attack him with it. The young man calmly catches the sword, and blasts Cold through the chest! As Cold begs for his life, the young man finishes him off, then destroys the spacecraft they came in on. The young man faces the others, saying that Goku will return shortly, and invites them to come wait with him. Vegeta challenges the young man, saying that except for himself, Kakarrot and Gohan, there are no more Saiyans. The young man refuses to divulge his name, revealing only that he is 17 years old. A short while later, just as the young man predicted, a round pace pod with Goku inside crashes to the ground near where everyone is waiting. Bulma assumes that Goku must know who the young man is, but Goku claims they've never met. The young man wishes to speak privately with Goku, and they fly off a short distance from the others. The young man identifies himself as "Trunks," the son of Vegeta, who has traveled back through time to meet with Goku. He warns Goku that in three years' time, a pair of cyborgs will appear, and that in his timeline, they kill most of the Z Team. Only Gohan survived, and Trunks learned his fighting skills from him. Eventually, Gohan is also killed. Goku died before the fighting broke out, the result of a viral heart infection. Trunks gives Gook a potent medicine that exists in his time that will counteract the disease and spare Goku's life. Trunks tells Goku that his mother, Bulma, was the one who built his time machine, and Goku is stunned by the revelation! Trunks leaves in his time machine, saying he will return in three years when the cyborgs are scheduled to appear. Piccolo, who overheard the entire conversation thanks to his Namekian ears, relays the important points of Trunks' story, without revealing any parts that would jeopardize his still-future birth. Goku tells everyone that as Planet Namek was exploding, he happened upon the Ginyu Force's space pods, and climbed inside one of them. The pod crash-landed on the planet Yardrat, and Goku was given treatment by its inhabitants. Gook learned a technique from the Yardratians, whereby he seeks out a distant Ki, and is able to instantaneously move to that location. Goku demonstrates his technique by disappearing, then reappearing a moment later with Master Roshi's sunglasses. The assembled warriors commit to training for their encounter in three years, and are about to go their separate ways, when Bulma has a thought. She proposes tracking down Dr. Gero, the Red Ribbon scientist who will develop the cyborgs, and killing him before he gets the chance to complete his inventions. Vegeta, Goku and the others oppose her idea, saying that they look forward to the battle that awaits them, and Bulma brands them all as sickos. Krillin reminds Bulma that without having a common enemy to focus against, Vegeta, Goku and Piccolo may just turn on each other. Goku invites Piccolo to come train with him and Gohan, and everyone else goes their separate ways. Vegeta has Dr. Briefs build him a gravity room, similar to the one he built for Goku. Vegeta trains hard in the gravity room that Dr. Briefs constructed for him. Yamcha later sneaks into the gravity room when no one else is around and tries the 300-G environment for himself. Unable to withstand it, he is overcome by the severity of Vegeta's training program. Vegeta trains even harder under these conditions and ends up destroying the housing of the gravity room, injuring himself in the process. Bulma attempts to help Vegeta out of the rubble, and Vegeta angrily yells at her to leave him alone. Elsewhere, as Goku and Piccolo train, Gohan shows great progress himself as he does his best to keep up with their pace. As Vegeta lies in bed recovering from his injuries, he has a dream that takes him back to his youth. Vegeta's father speaks to him, reminding him that he is the prince of the entire Saiyan race. Angered by the position he has taken behind Kakarrot, Vegeta arises from his bed and returns to training in a repaired gravity room under a whopping 400-G force! After being chased home from a shopping trip by a wild boar, Chichi sees a married couple riding in an Aircar. She becomes infuriated with Goku's shortcomings, and orders him off to earn his driver's license. Piccolo also finds himself caught up in Chichi's fury, and heads off to driver's school with Goku. Goku draws an elderly man named Used Carr as his instructor. Piccolo's teacher is a young speed demon named Cynthia. While the two are practicing driving on wet roads, a busload of preschoolers gets trapped in a mudslide. As the bus falls from a cliff, Goku and Piccolo rescue the bus in mid-air. Carr and Cynthia agree that with their powers, there's little reason for Goku and Piccolo to get driver's licenses. As Goku and Piccolo return without their licenses, Chichi collapses in shock.
