THE ART OF CARRIER LANDING

To the uninitiated this task seems daunting landing on a moving runway only the size of a football pitch .

Many people have big problems first time round as I did until one day it all clicked in to place .

Then i started to enjoy landing on carriers and taking off on them .

 

 

 

 

A good carrier landing is like keeping your plane on a train track "the groove".

This Groove allows you to pass through a 5meter by 5meter imaginary box .

that is your window to a succesfull landing .

 

This box is is important because you miss the box your not in position to land .

This will cause you to wave off your landing and go back to your carrier waiting pattern.

 

When you hit the box smack bang in the middle your just about setup .

You have just got to land in the arrester gear and your home .

LANDING PLAN

APPROACH

Approach the carrier at 3000feet aproximatly 1 mile out start decent.

Reduce your throttle and increase your flaps till you hit 150mph.

When your at 1000feet start to aim the "U" of the white lines on the deck

to your cross hair check your downward acceleration is at -1.

Lower the landing gear

 

FINALS

This is the 10 seconds of terror.

you chop your throttle right down

make sure its below 50% or the cable will snap and wont arrest your landing

You see the deck aim to hit the arresting gear with the tail end of your plane .

After you land look at your fps when u hit.

if u get 4.7fps you maybe staying just above your stall speed you might want to try a faster approach

if you get 10-12fps thats just right

18 is exsesive "exept for the f6f which u need to be harsh to land" try slowing down your approach

 

REMEMBER

These figures are based on the US NAVY fighters in the game

the other fighters might not have the same physical propertys.

Also the speeds might seem high but this prepares you for landing

a fully laiden corsair which u will find hard to control at low speeds.

 

 

 

 

tips

  1. Try monitor your instruments alot your speed and decent rate a cruical

  2. make sure you only make small adjustments on heading to land

  3. dont panic if you miss the box just hit 100% throttle and go back round and try again

  4. dont press home a bad landing approach u will crash and burn 99.9% of the time

  5. use all your planes landing aids flaps,breaks and throttle

  6. remember even the best pilots dont get it right 100% of the time
