Shannon, Executive Director 1.Project Youth: The Harmonious Volunteer Center, Inc., is committed to working collaboratively on youth development. This includes being a member of the neighborhood council and/or attending meetings on a regular basis. I/We agree to adopt the youth development approach listening to and involving parents, other adults and community institutions in the lives of youth. Residents and community institutions and organizations must work together to support and build on the assets of youth. This includes the following: *Building strong community relationships *Sharing ideas and resources *Developing new strategies in a collaborative way *Listening to and involving young people in decision making. We/I agree to be a part of this important effort to improve the quality of life for young people in the community. The Harmonious Volunteer Center has under PROJECT YOUTH established several programs regarding positive activities for youth development. One such program "KIDS ARE CREATIVE" addresses the concerns that we have for youth empowerment. The Harmonious Volunteer Center has been a participant with the "YOUTH OPPORTUNITIES INITIATIVE" sponsored by "TO OUR CHILDREN'S FUTURE WITH HEALTH, INC." since February, 1999. This program has been targeted for the HADDINGTON section of Philadelphia which lies between 52nd to 63rd Streets and Girard Avenue to Market Street. The Harmonious Volunteer Center has presented a communications piece for the collaborative titled "JOURNALISM TRAINING PROGRAM". The Youth Opportunities Initiative (YOI)is dedicated to increasing positive outcomes for youth (ages 10-14) in their neighborhoods intially through a planning process that involves and is driven by the community, especially young people. The second phase of this effort is to implement this plan and secure the necessary resources for success. Project Support: WELFARE TO WORK is a major concern for our urban population here in Philadelphia. On September 10, 1999 the Harmonious Volunteer Center presented a communication proposal to the Greater Philadelphia Urban League Leadership Council (GPUAC) as a part of an overall plan to address Welfare To Work issues. JOURNALISM TRAINING PROGRAM is what is being presented, which will effectively address adult literacy, preparation for industry employment, crime reduction and prevention, and social inter-action skill development. Having completed our presentation, the Harmonious Volunteer Center is prepared to activate the program immediately upon appropriate funding. For now the GPUAC Economic Development Committee will continue the process of resource acquisition. HVC volunteer R. Allen Mansfield is responsible for the coordination of the WELFARE TO WORK initiative and is the contact person: (215) 763-1090. 3.Project Support: COMPUTER ACCESS/COMPUTER TRAINING through MARS HILL BAPTIST CHRUCH, Rev. Quick and athe NRT is vital to education and community social issues. Dave Butler at )(215) 849-5311 is coordinating activities. The program is dedicated to providing computers to youth that are in dis-advantaged socio-economic neighborhoods. Senior Citizens and those persons with computer proficiency have the opportunity of volunteering their talents and skills in this program. The Computer Reuse Program allows for community and private industry partnerships. Any organization, business that wishes to donate computers to this program are invited to do so by contacting Dave Butler. MARS HILL BAPTIST CHURCH is located at 9th and Lehigh and Volunteers are being sought to contribute 3 hours of time from 10am until 1pm on Saturdays. To volunteer your time: contact: Irvin B. Shannon (215) 382-3469. 4.Project Awareness: The Harmonious Volunteer Center, Inc. has been fortunate in obtaining SADIQ ORE, Artist, Poet, Educational Facilitator, who has been designated DIRECTOR OF HVC's MULTI-CULTURAL AFFAIRS AND EVENTS. Mr. Ore has developed a series of workshop forums under the "GATHERING OF THE POETS" and is designing a variety of activities through the arts to include: Poets, Artists, Actors, Musicans, Actresses, Playwrights, Models, etc.. contact person is SADIQ ORE (215) 222-7140. Seminars and workshops that include exhibitors meet each Wednesday from 6pm until 10pm at the WALNUT PARK PLAZA, 6250 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, PA 19139. Share this information please. Admittance is Free. 6.Project Support: FUND RAISING FOR ORGANIZATIONS... The Harmonious Volunteer Center, Inc., has introduced several fund raising activities that benefit direct service providers (CBO's): a. Crime Reduction and Prevention Fund Raising Program allows groups to raise thousands of dollars on a monthly basis. A fund raising effort that reduces crime while raising revenue for all participating organizations while creating training and employment opportunities. b.Shopping Benefit Fund Raiser with Bloomingdale Retail Stores. A new cause related marketing approach allowing for the partnership of our community based organizations and private/public business enterprises. Contact your local organization for tickets then go to Bloomingdale on October 6, 1999 and receive a 15% discount on purchases. c.Raising Money via the Internet: www.mybusinesscard.org is now under construction. Introduced in August, 1999,this program is scheduled to produce a million subscribers within a year, who will be connected in a single directory. This resource provides our HVC volunteers with the opportunity of obtaining subscribers on a regular basis. The stipends offered is twenty-five cents for each sign up to www.mybusinesscard.org. On Sunday the 12th at the Valley Forge Convention Center, I personally signed up 419 people, thus my stipends of $104.75 for six hours of work will come in very handy. d. www.quicktar.com is a retail shopping mall. The Harmonious Volunteer Center will be opening it's store and making a revenue stream of financial resources available to it's volunteers and affinity organizations. e.Request for Proposals (RFP's) are always being sought and entertained by the Harmonious Volunteer Center. Please Note: *Urban Revitalization Program being developed for Cleveland, Ohio. *Casino and Resort Complex "Out of Africa" being developed by E.D. Gunter in Durham, North Carolina. *African American Legends Museum, 1217 Sansom St, Founder, Wanda Mason, Philadelphia, PA *North Philadelphia Empowerment Committee working in Collaboration with the development of North Philadelphia. The Harmonious Volunteer Center has also joined this collaborative to assist in development process. *Princeton University to conduct a two year research program on the health of African American Youth. Harmonious Volunteer Center is among one of the selected organizations and we have shared this opportunity with approximately 40 of our affinity organizations. *Harmonious Volunteer Center has been effectively helping neighborhoods organize and develop their local townwatch groups. HVC volunteers have been coordinating with local police districts, community groups, and operation townwatch. The HVC CRIMEWATCH unit has been very active throughout the year and encourages each of you to get involved with your local townwatch or contact Irvin B. Shannon in order to activate one. The Harmonious Volunteer Center has sent more than ten volunteers through the entreprenuerial training they provide for refugees.
