9/10/99 Reuse Meeting at ThruPut Computing

1.  Updates

Faith, MCOL
I've changed jobs from LibertyNet to the Mayor's Commission on Literacy.  As
Technology Site Coordinator at the Commission, I help literacy agencies around
the city utilize technology within their organization.  In different capacities.
 The Reuse Collaborative is an important resource to these agencies for access
to hardware they would otherwise be unable to afford.  NTR has already provided
computers to some of the agencies I support.

Stan, NTR
NTR has been up and running with programs for the community, including a
computer adoption program for nonprofits where the agency and interested staff
members register, train on computers, and take home a computer.  Recently NTR
placed an ad in the business journals asking for donated equipment.  NTR has
moved from 16th and Arch to 15th and Brandywine.

Jay, Ed Connect
This year the Education Connection project is supplying 5 classrooms of students
in Delaware with computers (that comes out to 210 computers).  Right now the
project is in the process of delivery.  E-Schoolhouse will be providing training
for the program.  Jay is in need of keyboards and powercords.  He has extra
monitors.

Fred, ThruPut Computing
ThruPut Computing builds custom computers for clients.  Fred has contacts with
Microsoft, and has worked extensiveily with the nonprofit sector (including
Edison's students, to get computers to Ecuador and Casa del Carmen).  Fred also
specializes in special needs computers.

Edison, Urban Tech
Edison worked this summer with his students to get a computer lab set up in
Ecuador.  Also Casa del Carmen.  


2.  Business

Reuse Contact:
John discussed need for more organization to reuse, and presented the idea of
having Fred be the contact for reuse.  Fred has agreed- the phone number for
reuse contact will be 215-450-2000.  

Reuse Site:
John brought up the need for a large space for operations.  Creative Arts
Resource Project (CARP) also needs space, and John suggested working together
with this group.
Edison has a contact at the American Street Empowerment Zone-- he may be able to
secure a building in this area for the reuse collaborative.  John offered to
help look for a building in the American Street EZ.

Reuse into the Public:
Edison informed us that on September 29, the Secretary of Education Richard
Riley will be in Philadelphia for a presentation on Service Learning.  Kellog,
Pew, and William Penn Foundations, among others, will be present.  This is a
great opportunity for the reuse collaborative to demonstrate to the community
and to funders what we're about.  Edison suggested having two representatives
present at the program.  

Reuse Board:
The board and roles of members was decided--
Edison- President
Stan- Vice President and Treasurer
Faith- Secretary
Jay- Board member
Dave- Board member
Fred- Executive Director
John- Consultant to the board

501C3 Status:
Edison (through Urban Tech) is a member of the national nonprofit Tech Corps. 
He is going to look into having Reuse use this 501C3.  The collaboarative will
then vote over email about this.

Other Reuse Members:
Please let us know over this listserv if you were not present at the meeting,
but would like to be a part of the Reuse Collaborative.


3.  Next Meeting

The next meeting will take place on Friday, October 1, at 12 noon.  Jay will
reserve the WHYY new community meeting area (6th and Arch)for the meeting.  Jay,
can you confirm?  We will set up committees at this meeting, and hear an update
about the 9/29 program with Edison.  (I just found out I have another meeting
until 12 that day, so I will be a little late).
