Steinway Pianos

Let's start with the model M, a 5'7" grand. This one was a brand new, "out of the box" Steinway M. It had a price tag of $37K which is either a result of recent price hikes or somewhat negotiable.

I was probably expecting less than I experienced from this piano. I felt that although the bass was not as strong as one would expect from a larger piano, that the tone and touch characteristics of this piano were really quite wonderful. I immediately got the "this is a Steinway" experience that only comes from playing this quality of instrument. It not only had a distinct voice, but I could immediately tell that it would develop very nicely over time. The Steinway M has in my experience been a very surprising scale. I have no hesitation in recommending this size Steinway piano over many other much larger pianos by other makers.

Many of the pictures that were taken in this store did not come out sufficiently well to show everything and I will probably return soon to take more pictures and play more pianos. But while there, I did play a beautiful model L which had already been sold whose tone was sweeter than the M but which I frankly didn't like nearly as well.

But they also had this exceptional piano...

A STRONG BUY!

This is the best piano they had in the store on my visit and as of this posting, they had still not sold it. It is a rebuilt 1911 Steinway A 6'1" "Drawing Room" grand piano. This is the kind of piano that Steinway legends are built on and it had a price tag of only $24,000, a real steal, rebuilt to original Steinway specs by local rebuilder Gary Galucci.

UPDATE August 12, 2001

Since our last visit, Clark had acquired a wonderful rebuilt Steinway concert grand which was being offered for sale in the mid $40K's and well worth it. We anticipate Clark bringing in many other interesting pianos from time to time.
