My name is Dave Buchanan..."The Unknown Expert."  I received the inspiration to associate myself with this character from the Greek Philosopher Socrates.  Socrates adopted the question and answer method of teaching and used it as a means to abtain self knowledge.  Unfortunately, Socrates was seen as someone who attempted to corrupt the minds of Athenian Youths and was subsequently tried and put to death (399 B.C.).  Yes, put to death because he bothered to expose those who deceived people by masquerading themselves as Masters or Experts in all areas when in actuality they were Masters in specific areas.
Peak Speed Peak Performance For All Sports is designed to teach athletes that the answers to the most perplexed questions are inside of you.  Built inside all of us is a built-in servo or goal striving mechanism that is unique to us...the individual and our personal goals.  My wise Mother once said, "You are not who you say you are.  You are who you are."  Potential is what we desire to be.  The choices we make concerning the efforts we put forth is who we are.
From my youth to an adult I believed in hard work.  Hard work allowed me to master my craft...whatever the task was at hand.  Some things seemed to come natural to me...speed and quickness.  One afternoon (1964) I ran one of the fastest 100 yard dash times (9.8 official/9.7 unofficial) in the United States as a 13 year old.  Later on that season I not only our league sprint champion...I became a member of and won a Gold Metal in the Junior Olympics, but the closest I came to my fastest time was 10.1 seconds.
1965 I attended John Muir High School and my hard work was rewarded by making the Varsity Football Team as a 10th Grader.  I was told that making the varsity was unique for 10th Graders so I felt a tremendous sense of accomplishment.  One afternoon upon challenging us to run the last wind-sprint all out we were put into groups based on our speed and I out ran Harold Busby who just happened be the reigning back to back California State 100 Yard Dash Sprint Champion in the 100 yard dash in a football uniform, however when track season came around...learned quickly why Harold Busby was the California Sprint Champion.  The fastest time I ran during my tenure at John Muir High School was 9.6 in the 100 yard dash but I won more races with slower times.
1971 during an individual workout for the Cincinnati Bengals I was clocked in 40 yards at 4.40 after gaining 25 pounds.  The Cincinnati Bengals Scout told me that I had just equalled the fast time ever clocked for the Bengals at that time.  A month later while attending the Bengals Mini-Camp I ran fast but was unable to equal the time I ran at the pesonal workout.  Prior to training camp I clocked what must be considered a 4.38 because it was not in front of the people that count...the Bengals Coaching Staff.  In the Canadian Football League I ran a 40 in full gear which adds 15-20 1/100th of a second to your time...I ran 4.60 (4.40 in shorts) in front of the people that count, but I was not able to run it consistently.  That really bothered me but I was not the only one bothered by this flaw...which was a phenomenon.         
1983 While giving tips on running a frustrated player game up to me and asked..."Coach Buchanan, How do you run fast?"  I was stunned and stumped.  I could not answer this player about an aspect of my life that was responsible for my success as an athlete..."Speed."  Shortly after Chuck Ferrero our Head Football Coach attended one of Stovall's Sports Clincs and returned with a video tape entitled "Speed Football" by Kevin McNair.  As I watched the tape...the light came on illuminating my consciousness.  Kevin was articulating precisely what I had experienced but was unable to explain.  Now I could explain the mechanics of speed and I began to develope methods to support what I experienced as a fast runner.  1992 I was introduced to Tom Tellez, University of Houston and Santa Monica Track Club's Track Coach via an article in the Los Angeles Times entitled: The Science of Sprinting.  Tellez used the term "turnover" to describe the quality of speed while describing the dynamics of speed as consisting of stride length and stride frequency.  He spoke of the necessity of distributing speed correctly over distance so you will be your fastest when it counts...at the end of the race.

Finally, I discovered that our legs are supposed to turnover in the same cyclical fashion as riding a bicycle.  Both arms and legs are used to break static inertia forcing the body in motion.  Once our body is in motion we deemphasize our arms but continue cycling our legs at a high rate until we've determined our final destination...then we bring the arms back into play pumping them vigorously and symmetrical with the legs.
Who am I and how do I know what I know?  Who I am is not as important as what I know.  What I know is determined by knowledge of the sciences of biomechanics, physics and kinesiology.  Peak Speed Peak Performance For All Sports was designed to help you reach your highest potential by applying these scientific principles to your sport.  This is not a method...it is a science that can be applied to any individual and as previously mentioned...to any sport.
