MIKE
Mike is a photographer and owner of Caf Saint-Ex in Washington, D.C. After one previous trip to Iceland, he seemed to know everybody in Reykjavk. As frightening as it is to consider, Mike was our leader. When the plane arrived at Keflavik Airport at 6:30 a.m. and we were in danger of potential naps, Mike took the reins and drove us like a team of horses to the nearest bar. Over the next five days, he made sure that we never had too much blood in our alcohol streams. Mike shot the festival for Icelandair, and had a photo of Apparat Organ Quartet published in the New York Times. You go, girl.
CHRISTY
Christy is a big-shot international trade lawyer from D.C., but you wouldn't have known it when she launched into an impromptu duet with "Iceland's next Prince" (TAFKAP, not royalty) at a local sushi restaurant, much to the, er, delight of the assembled black-clad Reykjavk sophisticates. When she's not doing the lawyerin', she keeps an eye on Mike and is the level-headed one in the Saint-Ex partnership.
MISSY
A key figure among the D.C. art glitterati, Missy works at the National Gallery, but used her time in Iceland to slink around in her yellow-tinted glasses, casting sly glances and just generally being fabulous.
RYAN
Ryan works for Redeye Distribution and Yep Roc Records, and is an all 'round style-setter and bon vivant in his adopted hometown of Chapel Hill, N.C. Ryan tirelessly worked the music thing and came home with a stack of CDs, which he will no doubt play endlessly for his uninterested friends. By the way, Ryan absolutely loves it when I put embarassing photos of him on the web. (In this one, he has just discovered that they have beer in Iceland, and is clearly very excited about it.)
TONY
By day a mild-mannered engineer for a large telecom company which I won't name since they laid me off, by night Tony transforms into a drummer for three (count 'em, three) Chapel Hill bands, the X-Rayons, Jett Rink and Near Blind. Tony quickly adapted to the coffee house lifestyle.
GREG
Greg is a marketing consultant in Raleigh, N.C. (although Friday night at the Spotlight Bar in Reykjavk, he somehow became an "international record industry executive." Shrewd move.) One of the cooler MBAs on the planet, Greg seems to like nothing better than having a few beers and discussing the vagaries of the independent music distribution system with my indie rock friends. Bizarrely, they don't seem to mind. (Here he is doing just that with Artie from the band Error Type 11. No points for guessing which one is which.)
AMY
Amy came to Airwaves from the West Village of NYC, and we quickly co-opted her into our effort to raise the share value of the Viking Brewery. In addition to writing for a major entertainment publication, Amy is a photographer who specializes in wedding photography for people who want something more interesting than the usual cake-in-the-face shots. Definitely a stand-up gal, if not in this photo. (She was just resting her eyes.)
DAVE
A.K.A. "Me." I'm a writer and marketing communications consultant from Chapel Hill, N.C. I specialize in working with high-tech companies, but I'd love to find ways to get back to Iceland and work to market Icelandic music and culture in the U.S. You can read some of my writing here and here, and see some more Iceland photos and photos from Chapel Hill here. And of course, you're reading my writing and seeing my photos here. If you still can't get enough of me, check out some juvenilia at my other free, cheesy web site. And if you'd like to pay me to write things for you, by all means do.
Want to see more photos of drunk people you don't know? Artie sez: "Click on me to go to Dave's Yahoo photo page!"
