HUMAN ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY-Spring 2004

CLASS HANDBOOK

Keep for semester

TEACHER:   DONNA CANUEL-BROWNE

Welcome to Human Anatomy and Physiology.  I look forward to being your Anatomy teacher and getting to know each of you.  During the coming semester we will learn about the structure and function of the human body in sickness and in health.  We will learn how anatomists, physiologists and health care personnel understand the mechanisms of the awesome unit called the human body.  We will use logic to analyze and solve medical problems.  You will learn about particular diseases in depth.  You will learn to compose a Power Point presentation based in scientific research from the Internet. You will learn to relate everything you learn in this course to the importance of the state referred to as homeostasis.  In Anatomy A, we will focus our studies on some of the structural systems of the body including, tissues, skin, bone and muscle.  In Anatomy B, we focus on the digestive, circulatory, respiratory and reproductive systems.

As a student in this course you will be expected to fulfill certain responsibilities.  I have found that it is easier for students to carry out their responsibilities, if students know precisely what the teacher’s expectations are.  This is the reason for this handbook.  I also recommend that you share this booklet with your parents so that they can become familiar with this course and the work you will be doing.

MATERIALS:         BINDER (at least 2”)

                             FILLER PAPER

PEN

COLORED PENCILS

IT IS EXPECTED THAT YOU WILL BRING THESE ITEMS TO CLASS EVERY DAY.

 TEXTBOOK

During the first week of this course, you will be issued a textbook.  It is your responsibility to care for this book and return it to me in good condition at the end of the year.  Write your name in the proper place on the inside cover immediately upon receiving your text.  This is the best way to assure that no one will accidentally pick up your book instead of his/her own.  You should bring your book to class each day.

EXTRA HELP AND MAKE-UP WORK

I will be available for extra help two days a week after school Tuesday and Thursday for makeup work and extra help.  If these days are not convenient, I will try to accommodate you if possible.  If you miss a class, it is your responsibility to ask me what you have missed.  I will leave written work in a convenient place.  Some makeup work can be done at home and some will need to be done after school.  You have five school days to make up work that you have missed.  If you are having trouble understanding a certain concept or get a D or lower on a test or quiz you should come to me for extra help so that you do not fall further behind.  Extra help is available to everyone for any reason except skipping.  If you skip a class you may not make up work, you will receive a zero for the day's work, you may not get extra help on the day's lesson and your name will be reported to the vice-principal and I will phone your parents.

LATE WORK

If work is turned in late, 10% of the score will be deducted for each day the assignment is overdue.  Late assignments will not be accepted after 10 days.

WORK HABITS

Specific Good work habits that I expect to see in my classroom include:

·         the ability to stay on task,

·         being prepared for class,

·         making the most of your class time, paying attention as needed,

·         being polite and courteous to those around you,

·         being able to work and talk with classmates without excessive socializing,

·         trying to find your own answers,

·         knowing when to ask questions

·         doing your share when working with others.

·         Starting class when the bell rings.

·         Continuing your work until I tell you it is time to pack up your things

Staying in your work area until the bell rings.

These are important skills here in our classroom and mastering them will serve you well later in life.

HOMEWORK

On most nights you will be assigned a few pages of reading from your text.  You are expected to take notes on this reading.  You may use one sheet of paper ONLY.  I expect you to take your own notes from the text, as this way you will learn the most.  Copying the notes of others, copying the text word for word, scanning the text into your computer or photocopying of the text are all considered to be cheating and will be dealt with accordingly.  Occasionally, I will check your notes for quality and originality.  On most days I will give you a 4 question quiz.  Some questions will be directly from the notes, some on your understanding of the notes.  Don’t forget to come with questions from the reading to ask before the quiz.  If you do not have your notes done, you get a zero for that night’s homework and may not take the quiz or make it up.

DETENTION

Detention will be assigned to those students that exhibit disruptive or potentially dangerous behaviors.  Harassment of any sort will not be tolerated. School rules are to be followed at all times.  The length of the detention depends on the severity of the behavior.

LATES

You will be marked late if you come in after the late bell (yes, even seniors).  It is my expectation that students will be seated and ready for work when the bell sounds.  Lates may be made up according to school rules within five days of the tardy.  You must stay for 20 minutes to make up 1 tardy.  Plan to use this time to catch up on Anatomy work you have missed.

GRADING SYSTEM

Each assignment will be allocated a certain number of points according to its importance and degree of difficulty for example a test is worth 15 times a quiz, a research project will be worth a test etc.  I do not offer extra credit assignments.  Please don’t ask.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

In order for everyone in the class to feel comfortable and at ease, it is important to maintain at atmosphere that is free form any sort of social oppression.  No form of racism, sexism or ethnicism will be tolerated.  This includes slang and jokes that could be interpreted as oppressive to anyone (including the teacher).

HONOR AND INTEGRITY

We all know that it is possible to cheat.  I want you to know that Cheating is not OK!!!!  II could spend huge amounts of time and energy cheat-proofing this class.  I would rather spend my time teaching and preparing learning experiences for you.  I make the assumption that all of my students are honest and have a strong sense of integrity that would not allow them to cheat for something as inconsequential as a grade.  I consider copying to be cheating.  Cheating will be reported to parents and administration as needed.  Make the right choice.

Let’s have some fun and learn!!!!
