Outdoor Bronze and Ranger

I won't say much on this topic. This was actually the area of Venturing that first caught my eye. I felt confident that the young men I was working with would really like to become proficient at outdoor skills, and that is the basic focus of the Ranger program, as well as it's subprogram of the Outdoor Bronze. Things didn't quite work out the way I anticipated, and the crew at the time kind of flopped. (A small numbers issue mixed with young men that had some personal problems to work through.) The next crew I had a chance to work with didn't seem so interested on this aspect, although the interest has waxed and waned over time, so I haven't really had a chance to try this out much.

But a few months ago, I read a newspaper article about a team in Spanish Fork, UT (it was announced on the Venturing list) that had every member in the crew earn the Ranger award. It was an LDS crew, and they focused their outdoor experiences as preparation for a mission. They linked everything back to that. The Cooking requirement was a way to develop cooking skills in life. The Land Navigation requirement was mixed with learning how to get around in a large city. This gave me a better appreciation of how this component of Venturing might be used as a partner with the Youth Ministries in order to help young men fulfill their Duty to God.
