BRETHO'S WEB PAGE

Hi all my name is Danny Bretherton and I have been working on this web page,(in actual fact I was the youngest male Bretherton at the first family reunion in October 1974 held at the Botanical gardens in Bendigo,Victoria) I haven't had a lot of time lately to work on it but I am happy to say that I am back on it. The site is still under construction and some of the presentation of information has been a little rushed in lieu of getting out there for everyone to view. There shall be more updates of information also so stay tuned. In the next couple of weeks the appearance shall improve. All of the information here has been gathered by my mother who can be contacted below, if you know that some information we have presented in incorrect or if you have any extra information please contact her, she has spent a lot of time on this and wants it to be accurate.

THE BRETHERTON FAMILY REUNION

The Bretherton family reunion has been held annually for the last 31 years The most recent was held on 1st October 2005 at Numurkah Victoria Australia.

The 2005 Reunion was again quite successful; We had some family members attend for the first time and some who had not attended for quite some time. We also had our usual entertainer again. Ken was enjoyed by all who attended

THIS YEARS' REUNION WAS THE 31st and a great day was had by all who attended.

THE 2007 was just a small gathering owing to an illness in the family. We still had a very enjoyable day with those that attended
THE 2009 REUNION WILL BE HELD ON SATURDAY OCTOBER 3rd AT NUMURKAH details from

The Bretherton's in Australia are descendants of James Bretherton Of Liverpool who was a Coach Proprietor. James had a sister Ann ( she married Edmund Manley 20th September 1831 in Liverpool) and they were the children of Joseph Bretherton of Sharples and Ellen Appleton.

Joseph of Sharples was a brother to Bartholomew,Peter and Francis; Coach Builders of Liverpool; Bartholomew being the most famous of them.

James was born in the about 1806 (Litherland,Lancashire) and died 19th September 1841 at Fox Street Liverpool aged about 35.
He married Frances Wildey 14th November 1830 at St Giles Church of England, Haughton Staffordshire,England. Of their 7 children 4 emigrated to Australia.
Fanny later married Henry McKevett(about 1846) and died in 1893

In the Liverpool Census of 1841 it lists James and Fanny living in Fox Street,Liverpool. This is where the family was living when James died of Consumption aged 35.The informant was Jane Wildey (Fanny's Sister).

THE CHILDREN OF JAMES AND FANNY ARE:-

ANN baptised 24th August 1831 St.Peter,Liverpool,Lancashire,England

ELLEN (Helen) baptised 27th September 1832 St.Peter,Liverpool,Lancashire,England

JOSEPH baptised 20th November 1833 St.Peter,Liverpool,Lancanshire,England. He died 27th June 1913 in Melbourne,Victoria,Australia

JAMES baptised 11th August 1835 St.Peter,Liverpool,Lancashire,England

GEORGE baptised 14th July 1836 St.Peter,Liverpool,Lancashire,England

RICHARD BARTHOLOMEW baptised 16th March 1838 St.Peter,Liverpool,England

FRANCIS ROBERT baptised 20th September 1839 St.Peter,Liverpool,Lancashire,England. He died 18th January 1906 at Newham,Victoria,Australia

We are looking for the decendants Joseph, James, Francis Robert and Richard Bartholomew and any details of their parents James and Fanny.

After the death of their father, Joseph (17) James (16)and Richard (13)left Liverpool 8/9/1851 aboard the SS Lord Stanley bound for Australia arriving in Victoria on 6th December 1851.

Francis Robert also emigrated leaving Liverpool 21st April 1856. But we are not sure of the name of the ship he sailed on.

Their two sisters Ann baptised 24th August 1831 and Ellen(Helen)baptised 27th September 1832 remained in England and received a small allowance from Mary Stapleton-Bretherton to supplement their living expenses gained from sewing and both died unmarried. The family has copies of letters written by Ann and Helen to their brother Joseph in Australia

Another brother George baptised 14th July 1836 may have died as a child?

Joseph and Francis settled in the Lancefield and Romsey areas of Victoria.

Does anyone know where Richard may have settled?

We now know that James spent sometime in the goldfields of New Zealand at Rop Town,Totara, Westland; but we are not sure whether he stayed there. From information received James died in New Zealand of an illnes.

If anyone has any information about Richard and James it would be greatfully recieved.

After arriving in Australia Joseph also spent some time in Perth W.A. He left Perth 11th November 1853 to settle in Victoria
