Hattiesburg, MS - A huge field of 31 open wheel Mississippi Modifieds came to do battle Friday night at Southern Speedway. This also marked the first race for the Mississippi Modified Series. The field was split up into 3 heat races, with the top 5 finishers from each heat locking into the main event. With the feature slated to start just 24 cars, the heat races were a fight to make the show. The 33D car drew a starting spot on the 3rd row of his heat. Daniel quickly advanced into the top five and had a strong run finishing in third place ahead of hard charging Glendale Shoemake. This secured a place on the starting grid and allowed us to concentrate on the race setup rather than worrying about a last chance race. With a starting position in the middle of the pack, he quickly established a spot in the top ten running order. Multiple cautions began to thin out the field and also caused the race to be shortened slightly due to the time limit. In the second half of the race, the 33D moved up as high as 5th place at one point, but slipped a couple of positions in the closing laps. Despite the late fade, we still managed to place a respectable 7th against some of the state's top drivers in the first Mississippi Modified Series race of the 2004 season. |
