"Gentleman's Agreement: Discrimination in Metropolitan America" -- Essay #7 in Reflections On Regionalism
35 pages and
"Hostilities Escalate in Horn of Africa War". You might want to visit the ACLU site for browsing Racial Profiling in America. When I last visited (6/00), the ACLU Supreme Court Watch 2000 page was offering background and commentary on five critical
Court cases.

Yahoo had recently provided this very useful index. I have discovered that these pages often contain large amounts of current news and information. A few feature some fine historical information about the country. If you visit the link, you might select one or two nations that are in the news or that you will be creating lessons for in the near future. Most that I visited also listed Web resources in their country. For a quick sample of resources categories, visit an INTRODUCTION TO COLOMBIA, since it is still close to Columbus Day. I located a nice "Kids" page with images and under "Culture" a host of informaton about the country.

"Even under the most sophisticated death penalty statutes,
race continues to play a major role in determining who shall
live and who shall die." Supreme Court Justice Harry A. Blackmun |
"Resolved: That the Federal government should establish a program to substantially reduce juvenile crime in the United States."
This web site will provide resources for that debate, especially the listing of topics to research. This makes it a nice lesson framework for a debate/research project, even for those who are not involved in the national debate. Interested in a debate controversy? Insist that the debate team get the same coverage in the school newspaper. If you want to create a riot, insist that the Debate team get the same school financial backing as the Football/Basketball teams. Did you ever hear about an all-school assembly to send off the Debate Team for the championship? Get Real, Right?
British news site that requires registration (free) for full access. After registration, one of the first articles I read was "Nurses' 'confessions' revealed, By Caroline Davies. The description of how the Saudi police obtained the "confessions" is graphic and very disturbing. The general educational topic raised relates to "institutional violence" (in this case, how the confessions were obtained and the form and severity of the punishments). What forms of institutional violence are proper (the death penalty, war)? How have different societies and eras defined this topic? Are threats and emotional and psychological harassment by public officials acceptable in a democratic society? Some students might investigate the current Congressional hearing into abuses by the IRS and do some "original research" by conducting interviews with citizens who have be audited.
Another important issue raised by this service is the registration requirement. If you want students to access the site, they will either have to use your registration and logon name or obtain one of their own, which involves providing complete name and address and personal information. Although a check box on the site asks permission to submit this information to others, simply checking the box "no" is no absolute guarantee that others will not obtain the information. I NEVER give permission for my information to be released, yet my mail is cluttered with "spam" from vendors. Most currently are asking that you "unsubcribe" from a mailing list you did not join in the first place. How did these folks obtain my Email address and who else have they given it to....?? So...beware and have a policy.

The Monitor has a lot of information on this page. And, that's the point. This page is extremely well done because it uses few graphics, combines various forms of linking and indexing, icons and search tools(issues archived back to 1980!!) selections all on one page. A fast load results, and you can get to the news and features you want quickly without waiting for a spate of useless eye candy. As to content, five of the 1996 Pulitzer Prize-winning stories are online. I have generally found that the standard for accuracy and the depth of research often associated with the print publication is unmatched. Writers and reporters do not have the same daily deadlines and pressures. Thus, the content presented to the reader usually demonstrates greater research, reflection and accuracy than the daily celulose that piles up around the favorite lounge chair. Rating as a news source - the very top! |
