1. Clarity - avoid complex, awkward, and ambiguous sentences
2. Conciseness - keep sentences short and have only one idea per sentence, watch out for tautology and redundancy
3. Completeness - write complete sentences, avoid too many clauses in a single sentence, and end with a period
4. Correctness - use correct grammar, preposition, and word play
5. Consistency - ensure consistency in tense, ideas, punctuation, and tone in formal writing
