Issa Joon

Issa Joone

Location:

The Whiskey A Go-Go, Hollywood, CA / Year XXXIII A.S.

I had heard of an eclectic young lady named "Issa Joon" from a couple of people that merited My attention. I listened to a demo tape & really enjoyed what I heard. It was quite an eclectic mix of Industrial-type dance, middle-eastern, & ambiant, combined with a wide variety of instrumentation & synth effects. The overall feeling I derived was that of being in an Arabian temple of indulgence. Her appearance which adorned the front cover was intriguing as well. Her hair first appeared to resemble dreadlocks, but upon closer examination, they were actually braids worked through the entirety of her long, luxurious hair. I listened to that demo quite often, to invoke a sensual atmosphere, & enhance My own "Temple of Indulgence".

One day, upon surveying the local paper, I was pleased to hear that she would be performing soon, so I lunged at the chance.

When I arrived, a band named "Brick Chair" was already playing, a Grungey Hole-like group; so I waited patiently until they were done.

The lights dimmed, & melodramatic lighting flooded the stage. Suddenly, heavy bass drums & organ keyboards shot into the atmosphere, & that familiar head of hair, reminiscient of Medusa, appeared from the darkness. As the night beamed on, I was showered with brilliant emalgamations of sound, light, shadow, & her own form undulating to her creations, slithering, or almost floating with an etheric grace. She would alternate between bongo drums, keyboards, the accordian, a violin, & even a harmonica at one point! She was dalmation. She was quite a dancer, too! She used a veil to accentuate a song which would have been perfect along with incense & candles.

It was a little disconcerting that not many people were there to see this prodigiacal beauty, but then again, all too predictable. The sad truth is, that most people have bad taste, only consuming the flavor of the month, no matter how sour & bereft of richness.

I haven't heard hide nor hair of her for some time now, which may indicate that her band is either in stasis, or broken up. But one thing's for sure, such talent will not remain submerged for long! I expect to see her resurface somewhere & sometime soon. In the meantime, I Am content that I took the temptation to see her live.

UPDATE 4/4/XXXIX: Listen of samples and read her Bio
