10/04/03 We spent the second night in Crater Lake Campground and slept in until about 10. I hadnt slept well last night but made up for it. The bikes were calling us in the morning and it wasnt long before we had the dogs in their harnesses and the bikes ready to go. We thought we would just go around the loop once and call it a day but after we went around once we decided to go to the Amphitheater and explore around a little more. I had accidentally attached the Springer to Sams collar rather than her harness and this would soon prove a very bad mistake. Little Sam spotted a chipmunk running full bore to a tree and decided that she wanted to take chase! Because I had hooked up Springer wrong my bike went into a skid and it was soon a war of wills with only my brakes to keep us all going towards the chipmunk in a pile. Kim said the whole ordeal looked pretty scary from her perspective. I found my mistake and hooked Sam up correctly and though she lunged one more time towards the chipmunk, I had regained complete control
We headed out of the park shortly before one. It had been a really good morning at camp. It was an overcast day and Crater Lake wasnt as spectacular as yesterday and it was easier to bypass the overlooks. It was amazing how quickly we passed through without stopping! We were soon headed down the road 97 to 58 towards Eugene on I-5. We decided to stop for lunch at a Ski Lodge on the Willamette Pass. The dogs loved running in the parking lot and we had some egg salad sandwiches. The dogs ran full bore in the woods before we headed out refreshed.
We stopped in Oregon for gas and stopped at a church to feed and water the dogs and let them run a bit. We were soon on the road and passed through Portland as it got dark. We celebrated being home as we entered Washington. We stopped at a rest stop and ate dinner of the salad we had made the night before. We had a decision to make, should we go to a rest area or stop by a campground. We soon decided on the campground and found ourselves at Paradise Point off of I-5. We got there around 8 PM and had a campfire using the rest of our wood. It had been a really good day and it was nice to finish it with a fire. Now we are in bed and ready to go to sleep.
