Graphics
A very important aspect of any game, the graphics range from sub-par to absolutely stunning. Goku, Vegeta, Frieza, and Piccolo's models look plain awesome; I can see a lot of effort has been put into these. The way they run, jump, and fly so fluidly is just amazing. As for the maps, it's pretty much the same deal. Some are great, some are alright, and a few could be better. The charging effects and texture have definitely been fixed and look great.

Some of these problems can't be blamed entirely on the BFP team, the Q3 engine is limiting in several ways. However, it's obvious that some models and maps are better suited for Q3 than others.

Control
This is where bit of a learning curve comes in. Anyone who has played Oni will find it's not too difficult to adjust to, but regular Q3 players will be fumbling around for the first few minutes. Basically, there are two modes: ground and flight, toggled with a key. The shift key increases speed at the cost of Ki, and tapping a direction key twice quickly teleports you a short distance away (Zanzoken). While on the ground you can jump to great heights, which you cannot do floating around (although, obviously, freedom of motion is greater in the air). Once you get a handle of the controls, they work very well. Melee combat is not an exact science...basically get close and hold a button. I can imagine how difficult it would be to get something like Oni's melee system into the Q3 engine.

Sound
The majority of sounds come from the original Japanese series. Many sound fx and songs have been added to the game which makes it worth while.

Gameplay
Here's the meat of our review...how does this game play? Balance is a major concern when each character is different, and at the moment there are a couple characters that simply dominate the rest. Frieza and Krillin seem a bit over-powered, and Vegeta's Final Flash needs to be toned down a bit (at full-power it blows away anything and everything). Changes in balance are easy to implement, so I would expect to see the characters nearly dead-even by the time it's officially released.

Some attacks don't fit the series. Gohan is not the kind of fighter who would use a sneaky move like the Sokidan. In fact, the three characters that use that attack in the game; Goku, Gohan, and Krillin; never perform it in the series (Sokidan is a Yamcha move).

Lag is much better than expected, though things do chug along when there's a lot of players in the game. One on one will probably be common in BFP, so lag isn't a major issue.
