One of the largest scythrhynchids, the superb scytherbill is found throughout Southern New Guinea, the Aru islands and Eastern Australia in moist lowland forest habitats. The majority of the Australian birds are migratory, crossing the Torres Strait to winter in New Guinea. Female are similar to the males but have smaller, duller throat-wattles and lack the male's head crest.
