The black carpo is the largest stub-tailed (brevicaudian) pithecosaur, and also the largest pithecosaur in Africa. It feeds on large fruits and nuts, but occasionally also eats insects and small vertebrates. The first two captured black carpo specimens were completely black-plumed melanistic mutants, and lead to the slightly misleading name of the species.
