Earthbound
Review:
“Earthbound” is truly a unique, innovative, and (most importantly) fun game. What really makes this game stand out among the competition is that its setting is that of the present and you have to do things like use an ATM to get your cash, instead of the generic middle ages setting. Gameplay is pretty standard as far as rpgs go (choose to fight, use magic, use an item, run, etc.), but there are no random battles because you see your ememies on the screen before they attack you. I personally think that every other rpg should take one element from “Earthbound”, that being that if you are so many levels higher than an enemy and that enemy attacks you, you will automatically win the battle without ever entering into it. This really helps to cut down on repetitive battles and makes the game much more enjoyable.
The story is semi-generic in that you’re saving the world from an ultimate evil, but there are enough plot twists to keep the game upbeat. The main character is a young boy who is average as kids go, but one night he awakes to find that a meteor has crashed near his house. As it turns out the meteor was really a time-traveling ship in which a being that has psychic powers has travelled many years into the past to warn you that the world will be destroyed by an ultimate evil an he (of course) charges you with stopping it. You eventually meet up with four other people and travel to different locations in the world that will bestow power upon you power that will help you defeat the evil.
“Earthbound” has lively upbeat music, sloppy graphics (the only truly noticeable flow), and innovative fun (although linear) gameplay, and an up to date storyline and setting. I suggest you download this game and play it at least once a year. Oh, by the way watch out for the corny jokes, and always say “fuzzy pickles” (out loud incase you were wondering).
The walkthrough can be retreived off of gamewinners.com, and maybe one day Nintendo will release an “Earthbound” for Gamecube.
