| Entering season 4 with the Bullets, Robert Nesbitt couldn't have liked his chances to be playing dodgeball after that season. The then-25-year-old was more focused on a career in business than in dodgeball and was often skipping training so he could attend class. In his first two seasons, he had scored a lackluster 69 total points, nearly being cut by the league after a disastrous season 3 in which he scored just 2 above the minimum of 30. "Then the coach walked up to me (in the season 4 pre-season) and asked to talk," Nesbitt recalls. "We discussed my career plans and goals. I said that I wanted to keep playing in the league because I knew I had the ability, but my play had just been terrible in the first 2 seasons. He told me that he believed I had talent and just needed to apply myself to training more. We finally agreed that if I didn't have a good season in season 4, the Bullets would release me, and I would probably retire from the league." Firmly set on giving more effort in season 4, Nesbitt would not be disappointed with the results. He shattered almost every season high he had prior to that season in a fantastic season 4, which saw him score 111 points. The previously second-string player nearly secured a triple-double, falling a catch short of the mark. He led the Bullets in scoring and won the DSL's Breakout Player Award by having a 79-point turnaround from his previous season. In the playoffs for the first time, the Bullets lost to the Enforcers in the first round, but Nesbitt stood out as having the best match of any Bullet, scoring 18 points including their lone game-winner. His combined 129 points in the 11 matches he played that season were more than enough conviction to continue his dodgeball career. Season 5 did see a drop in scoring, but Nesbitt proved that his season 4 was not a freak occurrence, as he notched 82 points for the Bullets and solidly earned another double-double. His 4 regenerations led the Bullets in that category. He would add 14 more points to his career totals in the season 5 playoffs, though the Bullets again lost their only match, this time in the Classic Division final against the Hornets. Regardless of the lack of playoff glory so far, Robert Nesbitt has demonstrated an ability to succeed and play a starring role in success. His career will be a reminder to anyone that hard work pays big dividends. |
