This was the team that was going to end the longest drought, ah forget it, five year drought of world series-less teams.
And then something happened. They lost. And lost again to an Orioles team sitting in SECOND place right now. And before you knew it, they lost to fell to 4-7. The Orioles were not going to sweep a team that had almost triple the payroll. Yet, thats exactly what happened. The Orioles are the ones 8-4 and not the Yankees, and the sky is falling and the beloved Yankees have hit rock bottom...Okay lets not go that far YET.
But for a team built on Benjamin Franklins, they sure dont look like much of the all-star-all-everything squad they looked like on paper. And for a core of MVPs, VIPs, and NYC idols, they sure dont look the part.
Their pitching has been pathetic and their hitting has been flat out puzzling! For a team so loaded, its almost as if they cant carry their own weight. With a lineup that has had little consistency and an owner who has no patience can this marriage work? Can the Yankees actually suffer a playoff-less season or maybe the better question if could they bare through one if that was the case? George Steinbrenner has given this team all the fresh faces he can find, but the only constant is the ages keep getting higher. The Yankees keep on getting older and theyre potentially showing some of that wear and tare that comes with a team front-loaded with 30 year olds.
And now comes the adversity that comes with putting so many dollars into one team and so little success coming out. King George has already called out his team, and were 12 games into the season.
Now before we get carried away in the media hoopla, it is keen to remember that there is 150 games remaining. But it just might be the end of the line for a Yankees team that honestly needs a make over. And by that I mean, youthful exuberance. You cant just keep getting older and expect the wisdom and experience to carry a bunch of old hags through an entire season.
The Yankees need to rebuild. Not because they cant win anymore but they need to retool. They need a farm system, they need potential and prospects. The only P word heard in the Bronx lately has been Power. As in we can mow down anyone, because we can outspend anyone.
Newtons law of gravity has got to have some effect on NY eventually. You cant win every year. Its just bound to catch up to you. Again, it is just 12 games, and if I remember correctly New York started out slowly last year. But New York is already 4 games behind division leaders Baltimore and Toronto. And that isnt going to settle well with a team that expects to win and preaches winning. Not just making it but winning it all. So how crazy would it be for them to miss the playoffs? You just wouldnt be able to put a price tag on that. |
