Assessment That Drives Instruction

 

To scaffold the process of learning to read, teachers must recognize the characteristics and behaviors of good readers and foster them in all of their students.

 

 

v  Good readers select appropriately leveled reading materials and continue to improve as readers each time they read.

 

v  Good readers read and sustain their reading for longer periods of time---So….give them more time to read.

 

v  Good readers preview a book before reading it and predict what might happen, or identify topics included in nonfiction texts.

 

v  Good readers read aloud quickly and smoothly.

 

v  Good readers use a variety of strategies.

 

v  Good reader read for meaning.

 

v  Good readers read and function within a literacy community.
