Cupid Struck Me!
by Jade Dawn Marie G. Amor
It was 6 A.M. of February 14, 2001, just yesterday, when I was thinking about how I spent my Valentine's day last year. I could still remember how excited I was... having a date and all that. But it turned out to be a drab because I spent the whole afternoon waiting for him! Finally he arrived, apologizing that he was late because he was making his project! I was thinking, of all the days to do his project, why now? And the worst part was that he couldn't take me out because he was broke! I was expecting a bouquet of flowers and a dinner date, and guess what I got? A single rose and a bar of chocolate! Being a 'typical' teenage girl, I was disappointed and didn't talk to him for days.
Yesterday, exactly a year had passed since that awful event. I wasn't expecting much from my guy, based on what happened last year. But as I was halfway through my breakfast, my Lola handed me an envelope. She said she found it taped on the door. I instantly knew who it was from and remembered when I found a rose taped on our door a month ago. As I opened and read the care, I couldn't understand it since it was like a foreign language, or so I thought. So, I brought it with me to school.
As I got to the classroom, I saw a piece of paper on my desk and written on it were the code corresponding to the ones written on the card. It toke me forever to break it, but it paid off because it turned out to be a poem which he wrote and he knew I couldn't resist poets!
Later that morning, he came up to me and asked me if I got his message. With a smile, I said 'Yes' and thanked him. But something was missing, I still didn't get a bouquet of roses! He explained to me out! It was like deja vu but I thought that it was better than nothing.
That afternoon, we were sitting next to each other on the school bus for a class activity. I was wondering why he brought his bag along since there was absolutely nothing to bring. He still kept apologizing about the roses. I said it was ok but it really wasn't. To my surprise, he took a 'Tazmania' paper bag - which was my favorite - and gave it to me. He said it was all he could give me. I was grinning from ear to ear! When I saw what was in it, I was really impressed! It was a very cute pillow with a heart in the middle which he made himself! I don't even have the patience to sew my skirt and he did that for me! Believe me, it was the sweetest thing anyone has ever done for me and I was so proud of my guy! Along with the pillow was a letter which I read when I got home.
In my room, as I was pacing back and forth while reading the letter, I came to a halt. As I read the last line, I was filled with so much emotion and felt Cupid's arrow strike me. The letter was all about how special that day was for him even though we didn't have a date. I found out that I was so special to him when I though that I was just another girl, not really worth sharing his life with. He also wrote that even if we don't have a formal relationship, he still had his special commitment... and that was... to love me! There was nothing I could do but cry.
I learned a lot that day. I learned that from the smallest gestures, the simplest gifts... he did it all out of love and not even a garden of roses or a dinner at a fancy restaurant could outstand it... not ever.
