| The DeerWoman The story of the Deerwoman goes like this. A long time ago, there was this young girl who was not all that attractive. But even though she was not very attractive there was a medicine man that had fallen deeply in love with her. Unfortunately, however, she was in love with someone else. This man that she was in love with, however, didn't love her in return. He rejected her and publicly humiliated her by mocking her. This was devastating to her. The medicine man was also devastated by his unreturned love. So the medicine man turned the young woman into a half deer/half woman. The deer woman then began to travel from pow-wow to pow-wow luring men into the woods, and to their deaths. The men would be found the next day trampled with hoof marks in their bodies. They say that a woman can go insane if she looks into the Deerwoman's eyes and that men can not resist her. The Deerwoman would always go after the strong and most prominent dancers. Among the dancers they say that the only way to spot her is to look at her feet to check for hoofs. Supposedly, she was seen from time to time and almost caught but she jumped over large obstacles and got away. Bibliography The Deerwoman was originally told by Danelle Wilde-Johnson to me during a telephone interview. I summarized it for this web page. Danelle was told this story by her mother who is a full blood Chippewa. Danelle currently lives in Oklahoma City with her husband and daughter. |
