Even Horses are the victims of greedy violent humans.
Approximately 62,000 horses are slaughtered in the U.S. each year for
human consumption, mostly for the growing European market.
Another 25,000 live horses are exported to Canada for slaughter.
Many of these horses are pleasure or race horses no longer wanted by
their owners.
Yearly, about 40,000 foals born to horses producing PMU
(a source of estrogens for the menopausal drug, Premarin) are sold
for slaughter.
Stolen horses are also sold for slaughter.
A former slaughterhouse worker told Humane Farming Association investigator Gail Eisnitz, that he
and others at the plant sold both condemned and uninspected horsemeat to restaurants as beef.
The average lifespan of a horse is supposed to be about 24 years.
