| IN THE PRESS // CLICK TO RETURN TO IN THE PRESS MENU DAYTURA WITH DESTINY THEY BEGAN BY PLAYING SONGS WRITTEN LONG BEFORE THEY WERE BORN. BUT TODAY YOUNG SUFFOLK BAND DAYTURA HAVE LONG TERM PLANS - TO WRITE THEIR OWN MATERIAL AND MAKE MUSIC THEIR LIVING. RACHEL BANHAM MET THEM. With an average age of 17, Daytura seem an unlikely band to play the music of the 1960s. But those tunes, played by musicians less than half the age of those who wrote them, continue to go down well with Suffolk gig-goers today. Daytura may be young, but they're determined. Their current line-up was only completed in May but they've already played two local gigs. And with three of their members still a year too young to take their GCSE's, Daytura are already getting a flavour of the problems new bands face - how to get known and where to play being amoung them. Daytura are Danny Woollard, 23, on vocals, 15 year old guitarists Shaun Morris and Ainsley Rhodes, Daniel FReeman, also 15, on bass and 17 year old drummer Andrew Thacker. Daniel lives in Sproughton and the rest are from Bramford. Shaun, Ainsley and Daniel are all pupils at Claydon High School, and Danny manages a hair salon in Colchester. "As a young band we find it hard. We are restricted to playing at private functions and fundraising events which makes it difficult," Danny explained. "We have quite alot of interest from places but we are restricted because of our age." Daniel added: "Being young I don't think people tend to take us seriously as a band. They see it as a hobby - but we would like to take it further." Daytura have already had 'loads' of support from local people and now the challenge is on to spread the word. They play covers from the 60s and 70s by bands like The Beatles, The KInks, The Eagles and THe Sex Pistols. "No matter how long ago the music was written they are still really good songs to do. Everyone knows them and are keen to sing along," said Danny. Ainsley added: "But it's the quality of the music. It's come round again - the 90s have influences from the 60s." They play newer covers - by bands like Manic Street Preachers, Stereophonics and Radiohead. And they're writing their own songs - indie-based rock with influences from the current music scene and the 60s. For a band in it's infancy, Daytura are already learning valuable lessons. "It's who you know not what you know. The gigs that have happenned have been through people we know," Danny continued. "Art Of Noise lent us PA equipment, if we'd not had that we wouldn't have been able to do the gigs. We have not got any experience under our belts yet so it makes it difficult to make decisions on what to do. But Ipswich has a good band scene. THere are lots of pubs and venues in town that have live bands playing on a regular basis. Those are the types of places wwe want to play - people go there to listen to the music". So their young but they have a headstart. And Daytura already plan to apply for music in the park in Ipswich next year. |
