The Greatest Day

I have just known the greatest day of all!
When told that it is so, you should believe.
It was near the ending of the year, the fall;
When time grows short and falling are the leaves
All burnished gold and copper coming down
Around me where I stood, brushed by the wind.
Forlorn, alone, I sat upon the ground,
To think and wish that I had just one friend.
And all filled with despair, I cried above,
"Dear Lord, I can't go on! Help me! Please hear
And send a sign!" And lo, 'twas not a dove,
But symbolizing Him, there came a deer;
A fawn, still spotted, came and kissed my face,
And I was overwhelmed by our Lord's grace.
