Educated men and women, sophisticated ladies and gents
Well-to-do and down-on-your-luck, powerful and weak
Young and old, tired and bold, and radicals at your peak
Let us all sit down to talk; let us all begin to meet.
Let us speak about the children, future men and women
Liberated, yes, on paper writ -- emancipation found
Freed from the shackles of hungry jackals, but still by law, bound
For that we still must meet today -- to speak of Linda Brown.
We segregate children from others their age, solely because of their race
It's the greatest flaw, this sanction of law, which forces the child to yield
And may wound their hearts and damage their minds in ways that can never be healed
Hearken to me and hear my words: Plessy must be repealed!
Separate but equal can no longer hold, unity must be achieved
Hard fought battles and hard won freedoms must end all subjugation
For today's education is the future's foundation
And fair opportunity is a rightful expectation.
This nation is a tapestry, with many hues and textures
And the warp needs the weft, as the right needs the left -- heed the weaver's song:
The loom does not run just up and down, nor the shuttle short to long
The weaver knows the beauty in truth - our differences make us strong.
