My Dark Side

You do not want my dark side
You only want my grin
My light and lilting laughter --
I was too quick to let you in.

You passed my bright and happy face,
The dazzling facade of wit
You passed the depths of my desire
And saw the boiling pit

I should have left the mask on
And not shown each hard-won scar;
I should never have shown the damage
And let you think I was still unmarred

Worry not your handsome head
I'll not ruin your so-safe game
I can put the mask back on
And laugh when I call your name

And in the darkest, deepest night
When my soul calls yours to mine
I'll trample down the need to share
And n'ere offend again.
