A self-portrait at Niagara Falls.

I arrived in Buffalo, NY just in time for evening rush-hour, got totally lost trying to find my hotel and after a good hour and a half after getting to Buffalo, I checked into my hotel room. After about two minutes in the dive neighborhood I was staying in , I decided that I would go see Niagara Falls on what was a really beautiful Friday evening.  It was only a ten or twenty minute drive, I had nothing else to do, so I spent the whole evening there.

Niagara Falls is really two waterfalls, the American Falls and the Horse Shoe Falls. The river falls from the American side of the gorge and the best view is from the Canadian side. In the picture to the right, the left side of the photo is the American side with the observation tower that looks sideways at the American Falls (for a mere 20 dollars you can see the falls without the inconvenience of walking across the bridge to the Canadian side. Needless to say, I walked across the bridge to the Canadian side)

American Falls and Horse Shoe Falls.

A view of the Canadian side.

There is a strange contrast between the two sides, the American side is kitchy 50's era hotels and pretty dead, while the Canadian side is really glitzy, Las Vegas-ish with a brand new Hard Rock Cafe, Planet Hollywood, Luxury hotels, etc. and packed with people.
The views from the Canadian side are worth the trip through the annoying customs booth and the 50 cent toll for crossing the bridge (even if you walk across! I couldn't believe it, I had to pay to walk across a bridge).

American Falls.

Horse Shoe Falls.

The giant cloud of mist is so intense from the Horse Shoe Falls that I got wet taking this picture, standing as far away as I was.  After marveling at the falls for a while I walked back across the bridge, bought some cool souvenirs and went back to my hotel room.
