"Harry Bufford"-(Civil War Spy) AKA "Loretta Valezquez" Loretta Valezquez fought in the battles of Manassass and Shiloh. She then became a spy running information from Washington DC. to Memphis and New Orleans. Portraying this historical figure brings Civil War history to life. Harry talks of life back home the resourcefulness of the southerners via use of plants for necessities of life. Civil War sketches are shown, popular songs of the day shared and sung, geography and history discussed. Mrs. Teague has sing alongs and then does drawing lessons with the children with charcoal. One learns quite a bit once Harry Bufford playing a violin, steps from out of his hiding place asking, "What are you all doing here? I'm on my way to Memphis."
"Beatrix Potter" Mrs. Teague and Ms. Potter have a lot in common, both love nature and both love to paint and draw. Beatrix Potter lived a solitary life in London town. Thank goodness her grandmother encouraged her father to give her drawing lessons. Summers were spent in the Scottish Highlands and there Beatrix and her brother Bertrem wandered across their large country estate collecting bones to reassemble, observing nature, and drawing. Mrs. Teague has collected many birds, of which she has kept frozen in her freezer. When portraying Beatrix she brings along a few choice birds to speak about, and watercolour paintings. Children will be read a story, told tales of her growing up days, and have a watercolour class.
"Rachel Carson" One woman's writing left a dramatic imprint on how we view our world. Mrs. Teague becomes Rachel sharing information about her growing up days, reads a bit from her book, demonstrates a lake on fire due to chemical reactions, shows a collection of frozen birds, a collection of sea objects, and engages the children in a writing project telling of their favorite places and does a nature walk to observe or a drawing class.
Mrs. Teague has many years of experinece having taught at private schools, tutored individuals, taught at the Create Center, North Idaho Arts Center, and currently as Art and Literacy Coordinator for a 21st Century Program and a member of the Pendoreille Artists Consortium. She has taught in Florida, Montana , Hawaii, Idaho, and Washington. She has been in many art shows and has won numerous awards for her artwork. But best experinence of all, Mrs Teague is a mother of 5. The children are all homeschooled. Much is observed, explored, and wondered over and a holistic approach to life is lead. She has worked with all ages, from a class of art for early headstarters ages 1 1/2 to 4 and through afterschool programs in all grade levels. She has also taught her elders in classes such as free form crochet and basketry of which brought an 84 year old woman.

"In the process we call art, there is discovery there is joy. Thinking back on all the children I've met, I am confident the moments spent in creating have given them a wonderous gift. In my being able to give I am enriched also. When one walks in with pallette and prop and is dressed as one from history, doors of enchantment open. For a time we express and feel good." ~Dawn Teague
"There is not a word that can describe Dawn's performance. The amazement and joy of the children's faces is priceless" -Georgia Bier, Branch Manager, Pend Orielle County Library District

Throughout the day, the students continued to make connections with what they have been learning. They were very proud of their drawings and also continued to work on them. I was also fascinated with your performance. You were very believable". Valerie Van Dyke -Lillian Bailey, Elementary School, Metaline Falls, WA |

On Friday, November 15, 2002, Dawn Teague came dressed in the character of Beatrix Potter at the invitation of the Artists After School Program of the Sandpoint Branch of the East Bonner County Library District. Her presentation was a delight for all in the audience made up of elementary and middle school atudents with some parents and library staff also in attendence. Her dress, language and demeanor fit Beatrix perfectly. Some of the youngest children truely believed she was Ms. Potter. Dawn had an impressive collection of frozen birds which she let the children investigate all the while telling them of her adventures growing up and the signifigance birds played in her youth. She had prepared painting boards for their work and then Dawn gave everyone instructions on how to use water colors to reproduce the birds she had brought. The room was quiet as the young artists dipped paints and spread their skill. Many happy souls left with their water color efforts. Then as she was cleaning up the older students stepped forth and asked to see her own work. Dawn removed the wig at this point and dropped the accent to let the teens see her in real life. They want her back. We all want her back. It is with pleasure that I recommend Dawn Teague as a storyteller and artist. Respectfully, Pat Demarco -Youth Services Librarian
