Stephen Gately

Born March 17, 1976 in Dublin, Stephen is the fourth of five children.

Stephen was actually the first of the group to find fame in a minor way by having a role as an extra in the film, The Commitments. That apparently whetted his appetite for more, and he auditioned for a part in Boyzone.

During his time in Boyzone, Stephen also had opportunities for solo work which were released under the Boyzone name. He performed a song for the soundtrack of the Walt Disney film, Hercules, called Shooting Star, which also appeared as a b-side on the Boyzone single Baby, Can I Hold You?

In 1998, Stephen shared vocals on the Boyzone hit No Matter What, which was also featured in the film Notting Hill. No Matter What was Boyzone's biggest selling single as well.

As a solo artist, Stephen released an album in 2000 called New Beginning, releasing a title track of the same name. At the same time, he gave voice to the character of Blackavar in the children's animated series Watership Down, and sang the song Bright Eyes for the soundtrack.

He also recorded a song for the award winning film Billy Elliot , a track called I Believe.

In 2003, he starred in the title role of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, playing the role of Joseph on tour and at the New London Theatre on Drury Lane. Stephen starred in the role at the West End theatre from February to September 2004.

In 2005, Stephen played the role of the Childcatcher in Chitty Chitty, Bang Bang at the Palladium Theatre in London. The role was a different one from the likable Joseph that he had played in his West End debut, and showed his versatility in acting roles.

Stephen has remained busy, starring in the Christmas Pantomime, [i]Cinderella[/i] as the prince's manservant, Dandini. The show runs through mid January, 2006, after which Stephen will be co-hosting the 2006 Childline with Keith.
