Relena is the pampered adoptive daughter of an Earth Alliance minister, and the undisputed queen bee of her posh private school. However, she yearns for something more in her well-ordered life, and her chance encounter with Gundam pilot Heero Yuy soon provides exactly the kind of excitement she'd been longing - plus an element of dangerous flirtation.
Early in the story, Relena's dying foster father reveals her real identity: she is the daughter of King Peacecraft of the Cinq Kingdom, spirited away to safety when the kingdom was razed (demolished) by Alliance troops. Relena soon decides to continue the pacifist work of her parents (both adopted and biological), and becomes a leading advocate for peace and nonviolence in an increasingly chaotic world.

Angel's SPOILER-FUL opinion on Relena's role:
Relena Darlian is the partner of Heero Yuy in Gundam Wing. At first she is the (adoptive) daughter of Foreign Minister Darlian, who is trying to make peace talks with the colonies. She comes with her father, because she does not get to spend too much time with him. She doesn't really understand what is happening, and she is disappointed when her father cannot stay on days that are special to her (like her birthday party). Relena unexpectedly sees the face of Heero Yuy, a Gundam pilot. Because of this, Heero must kill her (but he can't bring himself to do it!) Heero stays in her school, where she is the most popular girl. She is popular mainly because she is the (semi-rich) daughter of the foreign minister.
Anyway, before her foster father dies, he tells her that her real name is Relena Peacecraft, and she is from the Cinq Kingdom, a pacifist (kingdom) country. We also get to know later that her brother is Milliardo Peacecraft (a.k.a. Zechs Merquise, a.k.a. Wind). So Relena walks another path to pacifism. She rebuilds the Cinq Kingdom, and founds a school where she can teach her pacifist philosophies. This is a threat to Romefeller, so they execute many plans to stop it (sending Dorothy, attacking, etc). In one episode, Heero & Quatre tell her that total pacifism is wrong, she must work for peace, not just to be a pacifist.
But then Romefeller enters, and Relena is forced to surrender the Kingdom. Unexpectedly, she is supported by Romefeller as Queen of the World, thinking they can gain influence from her. Instead, she changes Romefeller itself, turning them to work for peace too. (She orders all weapons to be cast aside.) However, Zechs suddenly joins with White Fang, a rebel group trying to gain independence for the colonies. He announces that he is going to destroy the world, because Earth is the root of war. Treize then comes and deposes her (he gets the guys in charge to resign her). Relena knows she cannot do anything on Earth, so she heads for Libra, White Fang's HQ. There, she tries to change her brother's mind. But Heero is the only one who can stop him. Before Heero goes to fight, they have a talk about their future. Heero tells her that he has to fight Zechs, so Relena (and humankind in general) can live in a peaceful world.
She is sent away to the MO-II (Treize's HQ) after Treize dies and the Libra is almost destroyed. She meets up with Lady Une. Lady Une offers to let Relena kill her, because the former killed the latter's foster father. But Relena doesn't want to be involved in war again, so she refuses. She believes that they can all change and work for peace. Lady Une agrees, and they watch as the battle between Zechs & Heero continue, with part of Libra heading for Earth.
Heero destroys the Libra, and peace is returned to the world. Relena becomes Vice-Foreign Minister Darlian (she returned to Darlian) and intends to work for everlasting peace.
The Unusual
I agree with Angel. So far no one else has written such a great (opinionative) bio about Relena. Most people think of her as weak and brainless. I do not agree. You have to have a mind and a strong will to rule a country. (And even if the Cinq Kingdom did fall that was because of Romafellar and the fact that she was not trained or experienced in ruling a country. She was only a teenager.
Onto Heero and Relina's relationship. Ahh, now this is a controversial debate.
Relena haters: He hates her!
Relina fans: He loves her!
Creators of GW: They are just friends.
Okay, no offense Creators, but there is no such thing as 'just friends' between a guy and a girl. At least not when they're teenagers and deffinetly not long term. Aquaintences that rarely meet, and 'just friends' that don't last very long, yes. 'Just friends' that act the way Relina and Heero act towards each other and have known each other for so long? No Way! I ain't buyin' it. Seemingly without meaning to the Creators (I have no clue who they are.) have created some sort of deep, strong emotion between those two. Either it's hate or love. Watch the series, decide for yourself.
Now for my opinion on the matter. I very much doubt Heero is capable or truly hating anyone. He's too pure, all of the GWP's are. (GWP: Gundam Wing Pilots) Relina seems to like Heero. She doesn't seem to love him but she seems to sense, even in the beginning, the bond between the two of them. Heero hides his emotions for most (if not all) of the series. But he says to Trowa, "Follow your emotions." Or something like that, but anyhow... I think Heero is probably following his emotions in the series and EW. He seems to feel a deep loyalty towards her, and he by the end of the series he seems capable of loving her. Almost as if he's falling for her. Think about that.
If nothing else I think Relina and Heero are (for now) just friends. But there is waaay too much heat and waaay too many strong emotions for it to stay that way. What I wonder about is Heero's renewed cool personality at the beginning and throughout Endless Waltz. (Curiouser and curiouser.) Relina's too! They seem as if they had a fight between the series and EW.
(Is there other than those? Cause if there is anything, I've never seen any of it.)
Heero and Relina have this habit of saying each others names in the series. In EW Heero seems to have shut down and Relina seems to have become less... Infatuated with him. Maybe the infatuation Relina felt deepened to love and Heero shut down his emotions because he had to save Relina first. Or maybe Relina stopped pining for him (in other words, she got over him) and they both realized that they could never be together because of her work. Maybe they just decided to let each other grow up before they continued anything. Maybe their both waiting for something.
Remember that Relina was taking over her late fathers position as Prime Minister? Remember how unsatisfied and miserable she felt as a child when her father was always leaving to go to peace talks? After growing up in that kind of a situation I doubt that she would want to have a family or husband. She doesn't seem like the kind of person to give half of herself to anyone or anything. Especially the people she loves!
Even so, in EW we still see that the infinite trust between Relina and Heero is still there. During the battle with Mariemaya Relina trusted Heero to fire if he thought it necessary, she trusted his judgement completely. Heero trusted Relina to believe in him and to survive when he did fire.
I only see one way to sum it all up. The Princess and the Perfect Soldier. The Perfect Soldier may be slightly tarnished in some people's eyes but he is pure. And he seems to be devoted to her. The Princess may be a little confused about what she believes in now but she'll figure it out as she grows older. She trusts him completely. More importantly they seem capable of loving each other, if they don't now. Notice I didn't say that they were in love with each other, just that they might be.
