John James "Jackie"

Mary "Polly" Nichols
Pursley
John James Pursley was the oldest son of William.  He was born in W. Amherst Co. Va., on August 2, 1805, and died April 22, 1883 in Barren Co. Ky.  He was the oldest brother of George Washington Pursley
at the first of this tour.  Where George was a "hand" Dr., John was recognized in the Poplar Spring community as a regular medical Dr.  We have no idea where he would have gotten medical training, but he became known fondly to the people of the community and was dubbed with the nickname "Jackie the Dr. from Virginia".
By all accounts that I can find, he like his brothers and father was a very respected
member of the community and very well liked by all.  His wife, Mary "Polly" Nichols was the daughter of John and Nancy Burch Nichols, of Amherst Co. Va., with Nancy's lineage tracing back to 1600s Maryland and Oliver Burch.

My great grandfather Samuel Carter Stout, wrote a eulogy about Jackie when he died, that stated he

"was afflicted with cancer for 53 yrs., that is, it was discovered at that time, and he has been keeping his general system in good order for 35 years.  He was a doctor and practiced medicine for 40 years, and had taken medicine himself for the cancer."

He was the keeper of the poorhouse in Barren Co. from at least 1860-65.  He was also a juror in the John Adwell Trial.  Apparently 2 well dressed men had entered the cabin of James and Radford LLoyd demanding money.  Radford refused and was beaten.  He made it to his uncle William Bailey's house a 1/4 mile away, but later died.  Josh and John Adwell were soon brought to trial, John was found guilty and hung on June 20, 1856.  Josh remained in Hart Co. Jail to diffuse a possible jailbreak and the sherrif would not remand custody as Josh claimed his innocence.  But Josh was eventually hung in Hart Co. for the crime.  They both protested their innocence to the end, and there is still some doubt as to the guilt of these brothers.
